How to Tie a Less Mess Morrish Mouse

Tim Flagler ties what he calls a Less Mess Morrish Mouse in this week’s featured tying video. “I like to retrieve mouse patterns kind of slow but steady with fairly short, consistent line strips.” says Flagler. “This makes the mouse move in the surface film with a constant ‘V’ wake behind it. The lip of the fly definitely adds to the effect. I think it’s the wake of the fly that draws the trout’s attention while the silhouette of the mouse is what induces the take.”

Fly Fishing Show Gears Up for 2018

The schedule for the 2018 Fly Fishing Show will feature seven shows and will feature the top talent in the country presenting on a range of topics. “It’s the greatest fly-fishing event in the country,” says show president and CEO Ben Furimsky, “impacting the most people, and bringing out the greatest array of personalities, authors and experts.”

2017 AFFTA Board of Directors Executive Committee

Announcing Incoming Executive Committee

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
October 25, 2017

BOZEMAN, Mont. – The American Fly Fishing Trade Association (AFFTA) welcomed the incoming Executive Committee at the organization’s Q4 board meeting held October 15, in Bozeman, Montana. The following will lead the organization in Executive Committee roles into the 2017/2018 season:

  • Chair: Jennifer Lavigne, Waterworks-Lamson
  • Vice-Chair: Colby Trow, Mossy Creek Fly Fishing
  • Secretary: Lise Lozelle, Maven Fly and Casting for Recovery
  • Treasurer: Rob Parkins, JD High Country Outfitters

For the first time in AFFTA history, two of the four AFFTA Executive Committee members are female, indicative of a larger, more involved female contingent in fly-fishing.

Chair Jen Lavigne noted, “It is an exciting time for AFFTA. Having been the only woman on the board four years ago until now, serving with two other women is indicative of changes in our industry overall and its openness toward inclusion. We have a dynamic board of directors with a diverse group of skills. I am honored to step into the role of chairperson this year. AFFTA is dedicated to the business of fly fishing and will continue to work on the behalf of the industry and for the betterment of the sport.”

“Over the last several years as an industry, we’ve seen more women launching businesses, taking on leadership roles and having a bigger presence on the water,” AFFTA Secretary Lise Lozelle shared. “The AFFTA board is a direct reflection of its membership and it’s a privilege to be one of three women on the board, working with an outstanding group of people to move the business of fly fishing forward.”

Held in August, the 2017 AFFTA board elections also saw the election of Jen Ripple, the Principal of Fly Squared Media and Editor-in-Chief of DUN Magazine, to the AFFTA board. This marks the first time in recent history three women have served on the board of directors.

AFFTA advocates for and promotes the sustained growth of the fly fishing industry. By igniting consumer demand for products and services, providing businesses the tools to be successful, and advocating for access, protection and restoration of fishing waters, we will continue to enhance the passion and profitability of the sport of fly fishing.

Tippets: Saving Golden Mahseers, Sunscreen and Coral Reefs, Zinke Proposes Shrinking National Monuments

  • For fly anglers, the golden mahseer is a legendary and exotic fish. The species faces threats from multiple fronts, from pollution and overfishing to shrinking migratory range, and is now considered endangered. In the Royal Manas National Park, “a new catch-and-release ecotourism site established by WWF and the government of Bhutan promises to benefit the iconic fish, as well as tigers, by creating livelihood opportunities for people in the region.” Read “Can responsible fly fishing save tigers in the Himalayas?” Via WWF.

  • A document recently obtained by the Washington Post reveals recommendations by Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke to reduce the size of four land-based monuments: “Bears Ears and Grand Staircase-Escalante in Utah, Gold Butte in Nevada, and Cascade-Siskiyou in Oregon. He would also reduce the size of the Pacific Remote Islands and Rose Atoll monuments.” Read more from Steve Casimiro via Adventure Journal.

Tippets: Setting Up a Spey Rod, Pairing Flies

  • In the final episode of the first season of RIO’s “How To” series, Simon Gawesworth “explains how to choose the right sized Trout Spey rod based on fish size, compares a Trout Spey rod to a regular single handed rod, and goes through the various fly line options for Trout Spey rods that are on the market, and when to use each one.” Watch here.
  • When choosing flies for a tandem rig, “The important thing is to have rational for every tandem rig you present,” writes Kirk Deeter. “Variety for the sake of variety is not always a good thing. If you think you’re covering your bases by matching two flies that don’t reasonably work together … well, you are not.” Read more via TROUT.

Read more in the press release below.

New from Loon Outdoors

ASHLAND, ORE (October 4, 2017) – Loon Outdoors, maker of fine fishing and fly tying tools, once again brings anglers new products to perfect time at the bench and on the water with new scissors, ergonomic tying tools, and UV curing lights.  The new Ergo Micro Tip Arrow Point Scissors and the Ergo Micro Tip All Purpose Scissors come with enlarged ergonomic handles for a comfortable grip in any hand. They are hand-tuned in the USA to give precision priority, and the surgical quality stainless steel will last while keeping the cutting blades extra sharp. Choose the Arrow Point Scissors for perfect precision and the All Purpose Scissors for versatility. Available now for a retail price of $17.95 and $18.95, respectively.

Later this month, fly tyers can look forward to the introduction of the Ergo Bobbin Threader and the Ergo Whip Finisher. The bright Loon yellow ergonomic handles make them easy to find on the bench. The Ergo Bobbin Threader is extra-long for compatibility with even the largest bobbins, and the Ergo Whip Finisher has a sharpened base so finishing flies and clipping thread can be accomplished with one tool. Look for availability of both tools in mid-October for a retail price of $9.95 and $12.95, respectively.

In November, Loon introduces three new UV curing lights for use at the bench or in the field. The new UV Nano Light retails for $19.95 and is small enough for use in the field to cure UV Knot Sense or UV Wader Repair but powerful enough for bench use to cure UV resins. One AAA battery powers this light and makes it portable and durable. The UV Bench Light has a 3-watt, high-intensity output for tying applications. It is powered by one AA battery and will retail for $39.95. Last, but certainly not least, is the UV Infiniti Light retailing for $59.95. With its 10-watt output, this light is powerful enough for professional tyers and rechargeable to harmonize with Loon’s environmental-friendly culture. All lights cure the UV product in 15 seconds.

SmithFly Launches the Shoal Tent

SmithFly Designs has announced the release of their newest product, the Shoal Tent, “a first of it’s kind inflatable raft with a tent on top, allowing users to camp right on their favorite piece of water.”

Read more in the press release below.

SmithFly launches floating tent for camping on the water

TROY, OH (October 11,2017) — Innovative outdoors gear manufacturer SmithFly Designs has launched it’s latest product, the Shoal Tent. The Shoal Tent, is a first of it’s kind inflatable raft with a tent on top, allowing users to camp right on their favorite piece of water. Since it involves no rigid structure using inflatable technology, the tent is very easy to set up and take down wherever you go. Usuers simply pump it up with the included pump and float it out to their favorite spot for an incredible night, sleeping right on the water.

The unique floating design opens up opportunities for campgrounds and canoe liveries to even rent out these unique floating shelters on a nightly basis. SmithFly has already partnered with their own local canoe livery, Adventures on the Great Miami, to rent them out on the river through Airbnb.

Beyond the purely recreational aspects of the Shoal Tent, there is also interest in using them to provide temporary shelters during extreme flooding events like those experienced recently after hurricanes Harvey and Irma made landfall in the USA this year. With climate change creating more frequent and extreme flooding events, local emergency management authorities could easily keep an inventory of Shoal Tents on hand to temporarily house the displaced victims without relocating the victims to large-scale storm shelters.

SmithFly is currently taking pre-orders for our first production run of Shoal Tents, with the expected delivery date of January 2018.

About SmithFly Designs

Since launching SmithFly in 2010, the small but growing brand has won awards and high praise for a creative approach to modular fly fishing gear, including Best New Angling Product from Gray’s Sporting Journal in 2013. Since then SmithFly has grown beyond soft goods and apparel to include a line successful ultra-light inflatable rafts and paddle boards.

RIO Gives Anglers Complete Depth Control

RIO Products has announced its new InTouch Scandi 3D line, a Scandinavian style shooting offering a triple density coating for maximum fishing control.

Read more in the press release below.

RIO Give Anglers Complete Depth Control

IDAHO FALLS, IDAHO (October 2, 2017) – RIO Products, manufacturers of fly lines, leaders, and tippet material, offers fly fishers its new InTouch Scandi 3D line with a triple density coating for maximum fishing control.

RIO’s InTouch Scandi 3D is a Scandinavian style shooting head that seamlessly integrates three different densities along the length of the single head for ultimate depth and fly control. This line easily cuts through the wind and current to allow the fly to swing deep without snagging the bottom when the current slows. Built around RIO’s ultra-low stretch ConnectCore, the heads provide enhanced sensitivity, faster hook sets, and total control when fighting fish. There are three different density combinations available.

The floating/hover/intermediate head (F/H/I) is ideal for swinging flies in the top one to three feet of the water column. The floating back portion makes mending and pickups easy, while the hover mid-section and intermediate tip keeps the fly at the ideal depth for summer steelhead, salmon, and easy flows.

The hover/intermediate/sink 3 head (H/I/S3) is a better choice for deeper presentations or heavier currents with the fly swinging two to five feet below the surface. The hover back section allows for easy casting and line control, while the intermediate mid-section and sink 3 tip ensures the fly swings deeper – ideal for faster currents or cooler water temperatures.

The intermediate/sink 3/sink 5 head (I/S3/S5) gets the fly down deep and fast and is a great winter steelhead or back end salmon line. The fast sinking front section allows the fly to swing between four and 10 feet in depth, yet the graduated density allows for outstanding line control and easy casting.

Find these heads at any RIO dealer for a retail price of $59.99. For more information on this line, watch the video here.

About RIO Products:

RIO is a pioneer in developing fly lines, leaders and tippet material to enhance fly fishing experiences across the globe.
