Fly-Fishing Wisdom: Fear of Hooks

Anyone who fishes long enough is going to end up with a hook point buried in his skin; it’s simply an occupational hazard. This is why it’s important to debarb your hooks and always carry a mini first-aid kit in your vest or waist pack. But there are times when every precaution in the world isn’t. . .

Tippets: Tetrachromatic Glasses, Fighting Big Fish

  • Researchers from the University of Wisconsin Madison have announced the development glasses that help the wearer distinguish differences in color that are normally too subtle for human eyes to detect. “The glasses essentially expand the vision of wearers from trichromatic, in which we see three color channels, to tetrachromatic. This would be in line with animals such as goldfish, which are able to see red, blue, green, and ultraviolet light.” Jonathan Wright imagines how this development might benefit anglers in this article via Fly Fisherman.

Tippets: Guides Talk Climate Change, BTT Tarpon Genetics Program Results, Salmon & Marijuana Farms in Northern California

  • Fly-fishing guides and outfitters see the effects of climate change firsthand. Recently, a group of guides gathered in Missoula, Montana, to discuss topics such as non-native species, increased “hoot owl” closures due to warm temperatures, and expansion of parasites and disease. “We’re at a crossroads,” says guide Sean Blaine. “We are at an inflection point in our industry. We’re in an industry with declining resources and increasing numbers. We are the gatekeepers. We are the spokespeople for our industry.” Via Ravalli Republic.
  • The results of a two-year collaborative study between the Bonefish and Tarpon Trust and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to examine how many distinct Atlantic Tarpon populations exist has revealed high connectivity across the Atlantic Basin, highlighting the need for international cooperative management. Dr. Liz Wallace explains the study results in this article via BTT.
  • Marijuana farms are learning to be more fish-friendly in their use of water as well as fertilizers. “Growers in Humboldt County, believe that farming sustainably is not only the right thing to do, but is also good branding as the industry develops,” writes Maria Finn in Hakai Magazine.

International Fly Tackle Dealer Show Moving to Denver

The American Fly Fishing Trade Association has announced Denver, Colorado, as the new location for the International Fly Tackle Dealer Show. The event will be held in Denver starting in 2019.

Read more in the press release below.

International Fly Tackle Dealer Show Moving to Denver

BOZEMAN, Mont. – The American Fly Fishing Trade Association (AFFTA) has decided on Denver as the new location for the International Fly Tackle Dealer Show (IFTD) starting in 2019.

After careful consideration, research and discussion with our members, AFFTA is excited to announce that IFTD will be moving to Denver, Colorado for 2019 and 2020. The Mountain West is the epicenter of the fly fishing industry and the City of Denver is excited to partner with AFTTA to host the IFTD show.

“Colorado is home to some of the top fly fishing locations in the country,” said Gov. John Hickenlooper. ” We welcome the American Fly Fishing Trade Association to Colorado and look forward to helping it showcase some of the more than 6,000 miles of streams in our state.”

To increase industry participation, AFFTA has decided on a shift in IFTD show timing from summer to fall. The timing change is a result of feedback from exhibitors and attendees, creating an opportunity for increased visibility and attendance. Starting in 2019, the IFTD show will take place, Oct. 16 – 18 at the Colorado Convention Center. Denver is easily accessible from anywhere in the U.S as well as internationally and provides excellent opportunities for accommodations and entertainment.

AFFTA will maintain its current show dates in Orlando in conjunction with ICAST through the summer of 2018. We are grateful to the American Sportfishing Association (ASA) for their continued support and partnership. AFFTA is committed to making the 2017 and 2018 shows successful for both trade organizations.

“Co-locating ICAST and IFTD has been beneficial for many exhibitors and attendees,” said Mike Nussman, president and CEO, American Sportfishing Association. “We wish AFFTA and IFTD our best in 2019 and beyond.”

IFTD is the world’s largest industry fly-fishing show. Manufacturers, retailers, industry advocates and media are all offered exceptional business opportunities including face-to-face meetings, a demo day event, new product showcase, industry awards and recognition. Also, there are numerous seminars, educational speakers and excellent networking opportunities.

AFFTA President and CEO Ben Bulis said, “The decision to move IFTD to Denver for 2019 and 2020 was based solely on the desire of our membership and what the majority wanted. This was an extremely difficult decision, it’s not easy to just up and move a show without weighing all possible outcomes and one being our relationship with ASA.” Bulis continued “Our industry thanks ASA for welcoming IFTD as a partner in our first ICAST back in 2013. AFFTA is committed to making sure our relationship with ASA continues regardless of where IFTD or ICAST is located.”

AFFTA membership is diverse and spread across the United States and overseas, this move in both location and timing will provide more of our members the opportunity to benefit from all that IFTD has to offer to help build the business of fly fishing.

AFFTA advocates for and promotes the sustained growth of the fly-fishing industry. By igniting consumer demand for products and services, providing businesses the tools to be successful, and advocating for access, protection and restoration of fishing waters, we will continue to enhance the passion and profitability of the sport of fly fishing.

2017 Virginia Fly Fishing & Wine Festival

Fly anglers from across the country will celebrate the 17th Annual Virginia Fly Fishing & Wine Festival on April 8-9, 2017. Held at Meadow Event Park just 15 miles north of Richmond on the site of the state fairgrounds, the Virginia Fly Fishing & Wine Festival is the first event of its kind to combine fly fishing and wine tastings. Fly fishing manufacturers, lodges, guides, tourism agencies, and specialty food companies are among the more than 100 vendors who hail from all over the country. This year’s festival sponsors include the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, Temple Fork Outfitters, Green Top, NuCanoe, Orvis, Harman’s North Fork Cottages, Eastern Fly Fishing, Virginia Sportsman, Ruthless Outdoor Adventures, Blue Ridge Country, Bote, Mid Valley Press, Blue Ridge Outdoors, and Yellow Dog Fly Fishing Adventures.

The highlight of the weekend is Saturday evening’s Festival After-Party, sponsored by Virginia microbrewery Steam Bell Beer Works. Tom Cooper, one of the owners of Steam Bell Beer Works, is a longtime fly angler who loves the festival concept. “Fly anglers are some of the most passionate folks you’ll ever meet,” says Cooper. “When you combine people who are passionate about the outdoors and introduce them to our product, it’s a real winning combination.” The Festival After-Party will feature heavy hors d’oeuvres like smoked salmon, shrimp, tenderloin, and salad. Tickets are $25 apiece and are expected to sell out well in advance of the festival.

Oliver White

Oliver White

The 2017 festival will feature several of the industry’s most prominent anglers, including fly fishing icon Lefty Kreh. Other noted speakers and fly tyers include Ed Jaworowski, Bob Clouser, Wanda Taylor, Oliver White, Dave Whitlock, Brian O’Keefe, Mike Mercer, Blane Chocklett, Captain Gary DuBiel, and Colby Trow. Kayak experts like author Cory Routh of Ruthless Outdoor Adventures and Joe Mahler of NuCanoe will demonstrate how to access hard-to-reach waters. Christie Rother of East Coast Paddle Sports will demonstrate how to use a stand up paddle board to get in on the action.

Between lectures, classes, casting demonstrations, and lunch from curated food trucks, sample fine wines from some of Virginia’s best wineries (tastings included with festival admission). Attendees can wash down their wine or brews with live music from Amber Waves.

Returning this year are Family Fly Fishing Classes (3FC) sponsored by the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation. Parents and children will learn the basics of fly fishing and casting together. The entire family can also try fly tying! All 3FC classes and materials will be provided at no cost to festival attendees.

Attention, Boy Scouts: You can earn your Fly Fishing Merit Badge at the festival through a program taught in cooperation with the Boy Scouts of America. This special class is free of charge to every uniformed Boy Scout. Space is limited, so reserve your spot today!

“Our festival brings fly fishing to everyone,” says event director Beau Beasley. “When you tell folks that you can demystify fly fishing for the entire family and offer them a wine-tasting experience to boot–well, frankly, it’s a pretty easy sell.” Last year’s festival was popular with families throughout the Mid-Atlantic, including some from as far away as Rhode Island and Georgia. “If you’re driving several hours to get here, you’re staying here when you arrive. You’re staying all day. All weekend. You’re making an event of our event. And that honors us and our vendors. That’s our goal: to be an event worth that kind of a pilgrimage. Put down your phone, pull Junior away from the game console, give us just one day–just one weekend–and we will reintroduce you and your whole family to the glory of being outdoors. You will fall in love with flyfishing all over again.”

When you’re either fishing downstream or have a lot of slack on the water—for instance when you’re making slack-line casts, such as a pile cast or a curve cast—setting the hook can be difficult. Because there’s a lot of slack on the water, if you simply raise your rod tip, all you’re doing is picking up the slack. Depending on how. . .

AMFF to Honor Thomas McGuane with 2017 Heritage Award

Author and MidCurrent board member Thomas McGuane will be honored with the 2017 Heritage Award by The American Museum of Fly Fishing. The event will be held April 5, 2017, at a public reception hosted at the Racquet & Tennis Club of New York City.

American Museum of Fly Fishing to honor Thomas McGuane with 2017 Heritage Award

McGuane

“Thomas McGuane writes better about fishing than anyone else in the history of mankind.”–Jim Harrison

Manchester, Vermont (March 13, 2017) – The American Museum of Fly Fishing announced today that it will honor influential author Thomas McGuane with its 2017 Heritage Award. The celebration will take place on April 5 at a public reception held at the Racquet & Tennis Club of New York City. The event committee will be chaired by Bruce McNae.

The 2016 Heritage Award event will begin with a Leadership Circle cocktail reception at 5:30 in the evening and a general reception at 6:15. During cocktail hour there will be an array of interesting silent auction items for guests to bid on, including travel packages, fly rods, fly reels, and much more. At 7 p.m. dinner and a live auction led by Nick Dawes will take place, immediately followed by the awards presentation. Guests will then be treated to a special interview between our honoree and his good friend and 2014 Heritage Award recipient, Tom Brokaw.

Thomas McGuane has built an impressive literary career, from humble beginnings as the “Humor Editor” at his high school newspaper, The Crane, to becoming one of the most accomplished and diversely talented authors of our generation. He gained acclaim by deftly exploring the depths of human relationships and bringing a decidedly local feel to all of his writing. Whether the context is set in Michigan, the Florida Keys, or the plains of Montana, he deeply understands the environs in which his characters live.

The author of over a dozen novels, screen plays, and short stories, his novel, The Bushwhacked Piano, won the Rosenthal Award from the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 1971 and his novel, Ninety-Two in the Shade was nominated for a National Book Award in 1974. He is also the recipient of the 2009 Wallace Stegner Award, courtesy of the Center of the American West, and is a member of the American Academy of Arts & Letters. An avid outdoorsman who has both won Fly Rod & Reel Magazine’s 2010 Angler of the Year and been inducted into the Cutting Horse Hall of Fame (2005), McGuane infuses his works with a rich appreciation of the natural world.

Karen Kaplan, the President of the Board of Trustees, shared her excitement in the announcement saying “Thomas McGuane elevated the field of writing about fishing to new heights with the publication of The Longest Silence in 1999. We are delighted to recognize not only his immense contributions to literature, but also to recognize him as a world class angler and conservationist.”

Tippets: Pruitt Denies Climate Change, California Salmon, Op-Ed on the Pebble Mine, Great Lakes Steelhead

And he has sold out sportsmen and the future of clean water in the process. Via Hatch Magazine.
  • Despite the wet winter, California salmon have not rebounded from the state’s five-year drought. Ryan Sabalow of The Sacramento Bee reports: The adult fish set to return to Central Valley rivers to spawn were hatched two to four years ago, during the peak of California’s record-breaking drought when river and ocean conditions were abysmal.”
