  • Yeti has announced the launch of their new podcast series, “Drifting with JT Van Zandt.” The first five episodes are live and feature conversations with Remi Warren, Hilary Hutcheson, Jimmy Chin, Dan Rather, and JB Mauney. Listen here.
  • In this recent piece, Becca K. Powell reflects on the healing power of being on the water and how fly fishing brings hope. “The next time you find yourself on the water, take a moment and reflect on how fly-fishing has impacted your life.  What keeps you coming back for more?  Is it the calm after the storm, or the spiritual connection to nature?  Is it the thrill of the catch?  Whatever the reason, I’m sure it’s a good one.  And I KNOW that it is worth sharing with others.” Via Gink & Gasoline.

Tippet: Northern Pike on the Fly, Importance of a Good Net, Tips for Tying Season

  • Northern Pike are a great species to chase on the fly. “Found in most rivers and lakes in the Northern regions of North American and Europe, the Pike is an aggressive predator putting just about anything that swims into its belly if it gets the chance,” writes Jack Condon. “This aggression and the size these fish can reach makes them one of the most entertaining fish to pursue on the fly!” Via Postfly Box.
  • In this recent article, Darcy Toner of Faceless Fly Fishing Media outlines how a good net is essential for catch and release techniques. “A good landing net is beneficial for a number of reasons: it ensures the safety of the fish, helps the angler land more fish, and adds an interesting element to your photography. Such a net is one of the most underrated, yet vital, trout-fishing accessories.”
  • For many anglers, winter is the season of focused fly tying. From keeping a clean workspace to planning patterns and buy material, Bob Reece outlines tips for starting your fly tying season off right in this article via Gink & Gasoline.

Tippets: Cold Weather Catch & Release, The Solitary Angler

  • Anglers keep in mind the dangers of high heat and low flows. However, anglers are less aware of the catch and release concerns to keep in mind when fishing in winter conditions. “While fishing in the winter can be very productive and enjoyable, just like during the hot, low water summer and fall seasons, there are some oft-unconsidered catch and release concerns specific to the frosty months that should be kept in mind when handling fish,” writes Matthew Reilly. Via Hatch Magazine.
  • While fishing with friends is often the top choice of many anglers, in this piece, Domenick Swentosky writes about the joy of being a solitary angler. “Alone, I am my own angler. I fish the way I was designed to fish. I’m my true self when alone, and I think we all need to feel that sometimes.” Via Troutbitten.

Then see Carrie Collingwood, of Spatsizi Wilderness Lodge in British Columbia, as she travels via boat to a high mountain lake tributary to land bull trout on the fly. Finally, take in the coastal fly fishing phenomenon Jakob Lund as he swings for steelhead a stone’s throw from the Pacific Ocean. Tippets: Scientists on Proposed Clean Water Act Rules, How Fish Swim Fast

  • High Country News recently talked with Ellen Wohl, a river researcher and professor at Colorado State University, about how scientists view rollbacks for the number of wetlands and creeks protected under the Clean Water Act. “Even though there are these national rules, and even if they go into effect, there are things you can do locally to protect your local river,” says Wohl. Read more here.
  • How fish swim so fast has long been an unanswered question for scientists. New research, however, is shedding light on the answer through computer simulation. Scientists have “modeled fish propulsion on a supercomputer and calibrated the results using detailed measurements of the motion of real fish. Their model explains for the first time how fish generate thrust and even why certain anatomical structures, like tendons, are so important.” Via Technology Review.

Statement by Marine Fish Conservation Network Executive Director

Arlington, VA – The U.S. House of Representatives yesterday, under suspension of the rules, passed S. 1520, the “Modernizing Recreational Fishing Management Act of 2017.” Robert C. Vandermark, executive director of the Marine Fish Conservation Network, released the following statement about the House passing the “Modern Fish Act.”

“The U.S. House of Representatives has brought S. 1520 one step closer to becoming law. The Network appreciates that U.S. Representatives accepted the Senate’s hard work to improve this legislation and passed the bill without amendment.

“The task of modernizing our fisheries can only come through a bipartisan and comprehensive reauthorization of the Magnuson-Stevens Act. The Network will work with the 116th Congress to ensure future changes to our federal fisheries law promote healthy oceans and productive fisheries for all Americans who depend upon them.”

 Senate Passes Modern Fish Act

Statement by Network Executive Director on Senate Action on S. 1520

Arlington, VA – The Senate today passed by unanimous consent S. 1520, the “Modernizing Recreational Fishing Management Act of 2017.” Robert C. “The Marine Fish Conservation Network appreciates the hard work Senators have undertaken over the last several months to remove most of the onerous provisions in S. 1520. While we would have preferred the matters addressed in this bill be part of a bipartisan and comprehensive reauthorization of the Magnuson-Stevens Act, we believe the bill passed today is an improvement from where it started. International Fly Tackle Dealer Show Sells-out in Record Time

The International Fly Tackle Dealer show has announced it has sold out of all exhibitor booth space in record time, “maxing out the floor of the Denver Convention Center hall.” IFTD will be held in Denver, CO, October 16-18, 2019.

Read more in the press release below.

International Fly Tackle Dealer Show Sells-out in Record Time

BOZEMAN, MT. – For the first time in the history of the event, the International Fly Tackle Dealer show (IFTD) has sold out of all its exhibitor booth space in record time—effectively maxing out the floor of the Denver Convention Center hall, and doing so 10 months ahead of the doors opening. IFTD will be returning to its Denver, CO, roots October 16 – 18, 2019, 10 years after its last stop in the Mile-High City, 5 of those spent in Orlando co-hosting with ICAST.

“The speed at which we sold out the show is a testament to the difficult decision the board made in January 2017,” says AFFTA President, Ben Bulis. “One thing I want to stress, and I might sound like a broken record, but our entire industry is dependent upon the health and success of our specialty retailers. They are the lifeblood.”

To help ensure retailers have the tools they need to grow their business, AFFTA launched the business-focused Dealer Summit five years ago, which is taking place this coming February in Austin, TX. The decision to move IFTD to Denver was aimed at further helping make the show more geographically convenient for retailers, and the change from July to October aligns with a less hectic season.

“It’s been a tough ask over the past 5 years for retailers to leave their shops in July and travel to Florida for a trade show when their summer season just began. I’m personally looking forward to welcoming everyone back to Denver and producing the show our entire industry has been waiting for. I’m excited to see our retailers embrace this change.”

“I can honestly say that IFTD has played a crucial role in the growth of my fly shop business,” says Colby Trow, Owner of Mossy Creek Fly Fishing and AFFTA Board Chair. “For a specialty retailer to be able to spend three days in one location with almost the entire industry, building relationships, learning about the latest products and doing business face-to-face—this is the fly-fishing holy grail for retailers. Ben and our show committee continue to do an amazing job building out a very exciting show for next October.”

In addition, IFTD has committed to Kick Plastic at the show. Reusable water bottle filling stations will be available throughout the show floor with no single-use plastic present at all during the event.

“This, too, is an important move for us,” adds Bulis. “Our industry is committed to doing the right thing. Being responsible stewards of the environment is part of who we are. We’re proud to do our part in lessening the immense amount of plastic that’s choking our oceans and landscape.”

Exhibitors wanting to join the wait-list can do so on the show site: affta.org/iftd-show

Badge registration and lodging reservations for Exhibitors and Attendees will open on the same site February 2019.

Because at every pass, I learn something new. A good book is like that. You can’t process everything on the first reading, because you simply aren’t ready for it.” Via Troutbitten.
  • Success in winter fishing conditions often requires fishing deep in the water column. In this post, read about techniques for weighting flies to reach where the fish are feeding. Via Casting Across.

Seriously North received the winning nod from votes taken at the conclusion at each of 102 Fly Fishing Festival presentations during 2018, said Bird.

The film was shot in and around Nunavut, Canada, among herds of musk ox, flocks of ptarmigan, Arctic fox, bears and caribou.

Seriously North was produced, filmed and edited by the InTents owner’s group of Phil Tuttle, Derek Olthuis and Courtney Boice.  During production and post-production, principal photography was by Tuttle and Boice, editing by Tuttle and still photography by Olthuis.

Tippets: Prime Time on Winter Waters, Picking and Fishing with Chris Pandolfi

  • In this pro tip, Joe Rotter from Red’s Fly Shop details why staying on the water late in the winter is an effective strategy. “Oftentimes, the water and air temperatures are warmest just as the sun starts to go down–which also creates low-light conditions that make trout feel less wary,” writes Phil Monahan. “That’s when you may go from one strike an hour to four or five in a half hour. Such late success will make you feel as if the numb fingers and toes are worth it.”
  • In this episode of The Orvis Fly Fishing Guide Podcast, Chris Pandolfi, vocalist and banjo player for The Infamous Stringdusters, sits down with Tom Rosenbauer to talk about “trying to fit in fly fishing while on the road, how the band supports Trout Unlimited, how fishing has influenced his music, and offers some great fly-fishing tips for novices.”

Opportunity to Get Your Book on the Shelves

Wild River Press has a new service for authors choosing to self-publish their work: Wild River Custom Publishing. “Partnering with Wild River Custom Publishing gives you a distinct advantage. Our long experience in publishing quality books will help you (and save you much frustration) every step of the way.”

Read more in the press release below.

Opportunity to Get Your Book on the Shelves

From Wild River Press:

My guess is you have a story to tell; everyone does. Why not tell it? Last year we began a new service called Wild River Custom Publishing. This newsletter features samples of several books we have recently helped various authors polish and produce

There is a rapidly growing interest in self-published books. A number of professional services have sprung up ostensibly offering help, but most offer what I call “cookie-cutter” books–severely limiting the format, the number of photos you can include, the quality of paper and binding, etc. Few provide more than superficial editorial help. They really don’t care where the em-dash goes.

We do care. Our Wild River Custom Publishing projects have ranged from memoirs created as Christmas gifts for friends and family; to limited editions awarded as special bonuses to donors funding conservation causes; to full-on commercially viable volumes one can proudly sell at book signings, at shows and events, and even on Amazon.

Our philosophy is: You choose. You decide. And the subject does not have to be fishing or hunting, although these themes are, obviously, what we are known for. Good writing is good writing, whatever the topic. That’s what real publishing is all about. That and quality graphic presentation. Here are some ideas for your book:

  • Collection of your original stories
  • Your travel photos and experiences
  • Your exceptional fishing or hunting records
  • Your boat, cars, guns, collections
  • Your kitchen and favorite dishes
  • Your bird photography
  • Biography or autobiography
  • Promotional piece showcasing your sporting lodge
  • Nostalgic look at your family and/or home
  • Your children’s sports or outdoor activities
  • History of an inside look at your company
  • History of your fishing and hunting club
  • Your hunting dogs, past and present

Partnering with Wild River Custom Publishing gives you a distinct advantage. Our long experience in publishing quality books will help you (and save you much frustration) every step of the way:

  1. We will take your manuscript to the next level. Whatever it takes-crisp editing, rewriting, suggested additions or organization–I will personally help you say what you want to say in a lively, engaging and, of course, grammatically correct manner. Your writing will shine.
  2. Depending on the project, we can arrange for professional photography and even original artwork.
  3. Your book will look great. We will help you select a graphic designer to help you create a beautiful, visually impressive book you will cherish.
  4. Guide you to an excellent printer here in the United States (or Canada) that delivers on time and stands by their work. This is vital–no shortcuts. We will lead you through a range of printing options to fit your budget and produce a book that pleases your taste: softcover, hardcover laminated, cloth hardcover with traditional jacket–even a fancy leather-bound heirloom production for your children and grandchildren if you’re in a mood to go all out.

Isn’t it time to tell your story?

Tippets: Idaho Staves Off Steelhead Closures, EPA Guts Clean Water Act, Midterm Elections and The Pebble Mine

  • The scheduled closure of Idaho’s steelhead season won’t go forward as planned. “Members of the newly formed Idaho River Community Alliance, environmental groups and the Idaho Department of Fish and Game forged an agreement to stave off the closure. The agreement was approved by the Idaho Fish and Game Commission in a unanimous vote Friday evening.” Via The Spokesman Review.
  • According to a rule expected to be released in the coming week by the Environmental Protection agency, “streams that are dependent on rainfall and wetlands not physically connected to year-round waterways will no longer be covered by the Clean Water Act.” The change means “an estimated 60-90 percent of U.S. waterways could lose federal protections that currently shield them from pollution and development.” Via The Intercept.
  • The recent midterm elections had ramifications for the fight to save Bristol Bay. Alaska elected a Governor for whom Pebble’s CEO helped campaign. And “despite truly incredible volunteer-driven efforts of its backers, Ballot Measure 1, which would have protected wild salmon habitat statewide and provided a higher standard that Pebble Mine would have had to meet, failed to get the votes that were needed to be put into law.” Yet, “While disappointing, the fight is far from over.” Read more from Save Bristol Bay via Angling Trade.

Ed Engle on Spring Creek Solitude and Elusive Trout

“Overnight a light snow had fallen at the trailhead to the spring creek. No one else was in the parking area. Cottontail, coyote and mule deer tracks meandered across the fresh snow in the canyon bottom. When I crossed what appeared to be a frozen stream I worried that I was all wrong and the creek had frozen, but farther down the trail I saw where the spring bubbled up. Below it the stream came alive.”  Ed Engle writes about finding solitude on a winter spring creek in Colorado in The Boulder Daily Camera.

Tippets: Biology of Fly Fishing, Five Flies for December

  • Understanding the biology of your quarry can help you be a more successful angler. “The entire basis of fly fishing is to fool a fish into accepting your (entirely artificial) fly pattern as if it were genuine prey. Because of this, the whole activity boils down to ‘hotwiring’ the systems that fish normally use to recognize what is worth eating (and how to tell that apart from general crap drifting past!). So, while you don’t have to throw out what you know already, you can help to make your knowledge more effective by looking at it in the light of some extra biological info.” Learn more via Discover Tenkara.

Have Chesapeake Bay Striped Bass Stocks Reached a Tipping Point?

Tony Friedrich writes this morning about the status of striped bass in the Chesapeake Bay region, saying the time has come to stop shifting the baseline and accept that stripers are being overfished.

“It rests on our shoulders and ours alone to make sure the striped bass population recovers. It will take a herculean effort to turn the tide. But we can do it. Do we have any other choice?

Striped bass have given us all countless good memories. They have taught our children countless lessons about the ocean and how to care for it. They have helped forge friendships. They have created a mutual bond across the coast.”
