Tippets: Saving Rivers and Oceans, Joe Welbourn of Bullsugar Talks Everglades, Wilderness Fishing Mecca

  • To save the oceans, we must first concentrate on cleaning up rivers. “Most of us learned this stuff about rivers flowing to the sea in grade school,”writes Gary Wockner. “We learned about the water cycle that replenishes and repeats itself. That is, unless we dam and pollute the rivers, truncating the water cycle and interrupting the cycle of life.” Read more via Adventure Journal.
  • In a recent episode of The Venturing Angler Podcast, Joe Welbourn of Bullsugar.org discusses the ecological crisis in the Florida Everglades. Listen to the conversation at The Venturing Angler website or in iTunes.

Tippets: Reading Trout Water, Fishing for Muskies with Blane Chocklett

  • Learning to read water can greatly improve your success on the water. “Trout don’t hold in every water type,” writes Domenick Swentosky. “And wherever they’re holding they’re not always feeding. A certain percentage of the river is unproductive, and of course, that varies with different seasons and conditions.” Via Troutbitten.
  • In this recent article Oliver White writes about catching his first muskie while on the water with guide Blane Chocklett, who has learned about this species in a way few others have. “It was a brain-stretching two days of fishing, and I left with a level of understanding and admiration I didn’t expect,” writes White. Muskies “are toothy freshwater giants, but they are also finicky and test the limits of patience for most fly fishers. Via Fly Fisherman.

Tippets: Line Maintenance, Blind Setting the Hook

  • Fly lines can be expensive, and simple cleaning maintenance can add years to the life of a fly line. Steve Schweitzer writes about “Flyline Maintenance 101” in this article on Global Fly Fisher.
  • George Daniel, author of Dynamic Nymphing, focuses on an often overlooked tip when nymphing: blind setting the hook. This is “a tactic in which the angler sets the hook in a likely spot, despite not seeing any strike (e.g. an indicator or sighter hesitating or going under),” Daniel writes. “Some anglers may call this a “sixth sense,” but experienced fly fishers who know the water well may refer to this as an educated guess: the laws of probability are too great not to set the hook despite not seeing any reason to set the hook.”

Tippets: Observing Flight Patterns, Cold Weather Catch & Release Concerns

  • Anglers are used to looking for insects in stream and on rocks, but just as important, writes Peter Stitcher, is learning to match the hatch by observing flight patterns in the air. “Although you won’t be able to narrow things down to a specific species,” he writes, “the flight patterns of the three major orders of aquatic insects–mayflies, caddisflies, and stoneflies–are distinctive enough that an angler can identify the type of insect from as far as 50 feet from the river.” Via Orvis.
  • While winter fishing conditions brings unique benefits, such as fewer anglers on the water, it also brings unique concerns for catch and release fishing. Matthew Reilly wrtites: “Just like during the hot, low water summer and fall seasons, there are some oft-unconsidered catch and release concerns specific to the frosty months that should be kept in mind when handling fish.” Learn more via Hatch Magazine.

Emerger Strategies and Bonefish Tarpon Trust announce partnership through 1% for the Planet.

From Emerger Strategies:

Emerger Strategies joined 1% for the Planet in 2017 and has committed to donate 1% of annual sales to support nonprofit organizations focused on the environment, and Bonefish Tarpon Trust (BTT) will be its nonprofit recipient for 2018. Emerger Strategies believes in the important work BTT is doing because it cares deeply about protecting fisheries as issues such as population, policy and pollution increasingly threaten them.

This partnership is special because BTT is working to protect the flats fisheries that bonefish, tarpon and permit call home and Emerger Strategies uses its business as a tool to protect what it loves, which is fishing the flats.

Through its 1% for the Planet membership, Emerger Strategies has partnered with Bonefish Tarpon Trust who to date has too many accomplishments to list, but here are a few:

  • Launched the “Fix Our Water” campaign to inform and engage anglers in Florida’s ongoing water management crisis.
  • Mapped critical flats fishing areas in the Florida Keys that are helping to guide management strategies of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary and Everglades National Park.
  • Worked with Florida’s Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and anglers to implement catch-and-release-only regulations for tarpon and bonefish.
  • Assisted in establishing six nationally protected bonefish conservation zones in the Bahamas.

“BTT thanks Emerger Strategies for choosing BTT to be its 2018 1% for the Planet recipient, which will support BTT’s efforts to conserve bonefish, tarpon, and permit fisheries,” said Nick Roberts, BTT Director of Marketing & Communications.

Emerger Strategies is thrilled to work with Bonefish Tarpon Trust by making a financial contribution to the wonderful work BTT is doing. Rick Crawford, Emerger Strategies President stated, “the partnership between Emerger Strategies and Bonefish Tarpon Trust is significant because we believe in BTT’s science-based approach to conservation and want to support the work BTT is doing to conserve flats fisheries.”

About Emerger Strategies

Emerger Strategies is a sustainability and marketing agency that works with businesses to increase their growth while minimizing their environmental impact by turning their sustainability achievements into powerful marketing stories. Emerger Strategies mission is to build purpose-driven brands that solve social and environmental problems.

About Bonefish Tarpon Trust

BTT’s mission is to conserve and restore bonefish, tarpon and permit fisheries and habitats through research, stewardship, education and advocacy.

Through science-based approaches, BTT is working to protect and enhance healthy, functioning flats fisheries and habitats in the Western Hemisphere, and restore those in decline. This work is being done in collaboration with other institutions and governments.

Tippets: Book Talk with Blane Chocklett, Packing First-Aid Kits

  • Blane Chocklett is known as a guide and fly designer and tier, but with his first book set to debut in Autumn of 2018, he is set to make his mark as a writer as well. In this recent interview, Chocklett talks about the book and his writing process.
  • Not every day fishing goes as planned, and if injuries or accidents happen while out on the water, a first-aid kit is priceless. “First-aid kits are sort of like nail-knot tools: Most of the time, they are buried in the bottom of your pack or hidden in a side pocket, out of sight and out of-mind,” writes Mike Tayloe of Finns West, But when you need to tie a nail knot, the tool makes everything easier.” Read more about what to pack in a first-aid kit in this article via Orvis.

Tippets: PHWFF Partners with Jordan Spieth Family Foundation, Fly Realism vs. Movement

  • Project Healing Waters has announced their recent partnership with pro golfer Jordan Spieth and his family foundation. “Spieth, who has enjoyed fishing his entire life, went on a fly fishing trip with his brother and father late last summer. It was shortly after this unforgettable trip that he learned about PHWFF, instantly recognizing the connection between fly fishing and rehabilitation.”
  • In fly patterns, realistic movement is just as important as having a realistic look. “For me, the key to tying and picking out successful fly patterns from the bins over the years has been to always make sure a pattern incorporates equal parts of realistic features and movement,” advises Kent Klewein. “When you can find both in a fly pattern, you’ve got something special.”

Tippets: Winter Streamer Fishing, Hook Sets on the Swing

  • While small flies are often the go-to for winter fishing conditions, it is also the best time, argues Spencer Durrant, to learn streamer fishing. “Winter isn’t the only time trout act like this, but it’s the season where they’ll short strike most often; however, it’s a great way to learn how to wait for fish to fully commit to a bite before you commit to the set.” Via Postfly Box.
  • In this helpful video guide Trevor Covich outlines the best way to set the hook on a swung fly presentation. As a guide, Covich has had the chance “to watch hundreds of clients make thousands of hook sets on fish, and he has acquired valuable insight on the best way to set the hook on a swung fly presentation.”

Tippets: Wild Waterways in the West, Costa Helps Clean Up The Keys, Flows on the Bighorn

  • A new report, “Disappearing Rivers,” details the Western US waterways threatened by development and pollution. “Water may be crucial for life in the West, but Westerners in 11 states have manipulated and trashed rivers to such an extent that half are now impaired – an impact measured as especially severe in Colorado.” Read more from Bruce Finley in The Denver Post.
  • After Hurricane Irma hit Florida, Costa Del Mar jumped into action to help clean up The Keys. “In a season where unprecedented natural disasters have been unfolding from the Gulf coast to the Pacific Northwest, Costa del Mar and the guide community in the Florida Keys continue to be a great example of leadership and social responsibility,” writes Jonathan Wright in Fly Fisherman.
  • A new flow-management program at Yellowtail Dam was designed to increase water levels at the Horseshoe Bend boat ramp in Wyoming. However, it is putting excess stress on the Bighorn River downstream, and is causing erosion of important trout habitat. Reilly Rod Crafters Announces New Joe Mahler Signature Series Fly Rods

Palmyra, VA (February 8, 2018) – Reilly Rod Crafters is proud to announce the addition of the Joe Mahler Signature series fly rods to its line-up of quality fly rods. The Joe Mahler Signature Series rods feature a unique grip design with logo etched in flor-grade cork handle and have a complete lifetime warranty.

“We are very excited to launch the Mahler Signature Series,” said RRC President and CEO Chris Reilly. Reilly describes the Mahler series as, “everyday rods… comfortable, like your favorite pair of jeans. It’s the rod you’ll grab when you want to spend a relaxing day on the water.”

Reilly Rod Crafters other signature series rods include designs with fly fishing legends Stu Apte and Chuck Kraft. Reilly continued, “You likely know Joe from his numerous casting articles and illustrations. His easy-going approach and effortless casting style fit perfectly with the Reilly philosophy.”

On working with Reilly Rod Crafters, Mahler commented, “In ten years of giving private casting lessons, I have noticed that both beginners and experienced casters advance quicker and with less effort with a medium-fast action rod. I described what I wanted to Chris and he was able to deliver precisely what I was hoping for.”

The rods are available in two models, the Lily Pad 5/6 and the Cypress 7/8, using colors pulled directly from nature. The Lily Pad is a shade of bright green, and the Cypress is medium orange. Both models feature salt-ready hardware, including three titanium stripping guides. They also come with a color-matched cloth sock and plastic tube for easy transport. Both rods retail for $289.

“On favorite rods that I’ve had over the years, I customized my cork grips to feature a ‘dip’ for finger or thumb placement. This ‘dip’ adds both comfort and stability to the grip, so I knew that if I ever designed a rod, the ‘dip’ would be a must,” said Mahler. ”When I first casted a Reilly rod at the Virginia Wine and Fly Fishing Festival, I knew that I wanted to work with these folks,” he added.

For more information or to order the rods online visit https://reillyrods.com/product/joe-mahler-signature-series, or check the list of Reilly Rod dealers.
