Loon Outdoors to Host Fly Tying 101 Live Streaming Events in January 2017

fly-tying-101-w-web

Loon Live, hosted by Loon Outdoors, is a free, live streaming fly tying demonstration enjoyed by fly tyers from around the world. While the patterns cover a breadth of styles, materials, and species of fish in which they’d target, each episode trends toward the intermediate or advanced tyer. For the month of January 2017, Loon will be replacing Loon Live with a brand new series geared specifically for the beginning tyer called Fly Tying 101.

Episodes will air every Thursday night at 6 pm (PST) through January at loonoutdoors.com/fly- tying-101 and will cover 5 patterns that demonstrate techniques that are foundational to
tying. Once episodes conclude, they’ll be available to re-watch on the Fly Tying 101 webpage.

Loon Live is structured so that viewers can comment and ask questions during the live
stream. The attendance for these events commonly consists of tyers from 20+ countries and Fly Tying 101 was developed in response to viewer requests for patterns and tutorials that are geared to the less advanced tyer.

Each Fly Tying 101 episode will feature an assortment of Loon Outdoors products and feature patterns and materials from Hareline Dubbin’s Fly Tying Material’s Kit (for a list of available retailers to purchase this kit, visit hareline.com/info). Material lists are also available to download on the Loon Fly Tying 101 web page (loonoutdoors.com/fly-tying-101). Participants are encouraged to acquire the materials ahead of time so that they can follow along, but there is no purchase or sign up necessary.

  • There’s no better way to put a kid off fly fishing than to harp on technique. However, successful casting can help them enjoy their days on the water. Pete Kutzer demonstrates a simple method for teaching kids how to make easy short casts in this instructional video via Orvis.

How to Tie a Steelhead Woolly Bugger

The Steelhead Woolly Bugger is the subject of this week’s featured tying video.  As Tim Flagler notes: “I don’t think there’s a fish species alive that won’t take a woolly bugger, and steelhead are no exception. This fly is really nothing more than a beefed-up standard bugger but I do tie them somewhat differently than most people.”

AFFTA FISHERIES FUND SUPPORTS NEW PROJECTS
Helping to Promote Conservation and Stewardship in the Fly-fishing Industry

Bozeman, Mont.— The American Fly Fishing Trade Association (AFFTA) Fisheries Fund is pleased to announce it has awarded two grants. The South Florida National Parks Trust and the Snake River Waterkeeper were granted $5,000 and $2,500, respectively, to support their organizational missions.

SOUTH FLORIDA NATIONAL PARKS TRUST
AFFTA Fisheries Fund money will help enhance access and safety for boaters while providing greater protection for a Florida fishery.

SNAKE RIVER WATERKEEPER
The AFFTA Fisheries Fund grant will be used to carry forward a lawsuit is vital to salmon and steelhead persistence and recovery in the Columbia and Snake River basins.

The AFFTA Fisheries Fund was established in late 2014 with the main objective of funding organizations and projects focused on fisheries conservation and education.

AFFTA’s mission is three-fold: to grow consumer demand for fly-fishing products and services; enhance the growth and professionalism of fly-fishing businesses; and support the protection, enhancement, and restoration of fishing waters. The organization feels strongly that the Fisheries Fund is a substantial tool to both preserve and protect our resources, and to help expand the sport of fly fishing.

AFFTA Fisheries Fund Chairman Ben Kurtz commented, “Both of these recipients fall well within our goals the Fisheries Fund, and will have meaningful long term impacts on their respective fisheries. The first grant is to the Snake River Waterkeeper in a fight to improve salmon and steelhead conditions in the Columbia and Snake River basins. The second grant is being made to South Florida National Parks Trust for access corridors among the Everglades that will insure that the health of the ecosystem is protected while improving access. We are very proud of the work the Fisheries Fund does, and look forward to building upon our success in 2017.”

Please visit AFFTA’s website for grant application instructions.

Cheeky Fishing Debuts New “Limitless” Reels

cheeky-limitless-color-group

Arlington, MA – Cheeky Fishing is excited to announce the debut of Limitless™ Fly Reels. Limitless Reels are available now and set a new standard for performance, strength and toughness in the fly reel market.

Available in 5 sizes from 2wt to 16wt, Limitless Reels feature an innovative fully sealed Gasket Drag System (GDS). GDS incorporates six powerfully smooth drag discs maximizing surface area and eliminating startup inertia. GDS is impenetrable by the elements, so you can dunk away without worrying about salt, sand or debris interfering with the drag components.

Limitless Reels are fully machined from high-grade aerospace aluminum, and incorporate a multi-axis machining technique that redistributes metal to key stress points, making Limitless Reels stronger without adding unnecessary weight.

An integrated, yet replaceable, reel foot disperses torque throughout the frame during the toughest fights, providing the advantages of a one-piece reel foot without the disadvantage of having to replace your entire reel if dropped on the foot.

“Limitless Reels are all about improved fly reel technology,” stated Cheeky CEO Ted Upton. “Pushing the limits of what’s technologically possible is what defines Cheeky, and that’s how Limitless got its name. We wanted to design the no limits fly reel.”

Limitless Reels offer unbeatable line capacity, easy L/R conversion, an insane arbor size for maximum retrieval rate, and remain some of the lightest and strongest fly reels available.

For a limited time, Limitless Reels will also be offered in all black versions. Less than 200 black reels will be available at Cheeky Dealers around the world.

For more information on Limitless, please visit the Cheeky Fishing website (http://cheekyfishing.com) or check out the Limitless Launch Video (https://vimeo.com/193895350).

Loomis Design-Shimano Technology Brings Fly Anglers Asquith

G.Loomis and Shimano have announced a new series of fly rods called Asquith. “We are making a bold statement with Asquith,” said world champion fly caster and chief G. Loomis rod designer Steve Rajeff, “we are able to bring together cutting-edge manufacturing techniques and materials with proven G. Loomis actions and design.”

Loomis Design-Shimano Technology Brings Fly Anglers Asquith

asquith-590-4-fly-rod-lifestyle-photo

WOODLAND, Washington USA – Now Available – December 2016 – Shimano technology and G. Loomis fly rod expertise takes a step in unison to bring a unique concept to fly anglers worldwide in a new series of fly rods called Asquith. Announced this past summer at the International Fly Tackle Dealer Show – held in conjunction with ICAST, these new fly rods have now started to select fly and tackle shops in the U.S. and Canada.

With rods to target trout, bass, salmon, steelhead and also saltwater use, the Asquith line-up includes nine ‘all-water’ rods in nine-foot 4 through 12 weights, and five spey rods offered in a 12’9” #6, 13’ #7, 13’6” #8, 14’ #9 and 15’ #10. Designed with blanks rolled using Shimano’s proprietary Spiral X process at its production facility in Kumamoto, Japan, and then hand-finished at the G. Loomis facility in Woodland, Wash., according to the joint Shimano/G. Loomis product development team, anglers will find the Asquith series to be “the most technologically advanced fly rods in the world.”

“We are making a bold statement with Asquith,” said world champion fly caster and chief G. Loomis rod designer Steve Rajeff. “By collaborating with my Shimano fishing rod associates at our world headquarters in Sakai City, Japan, and our facility in Kumamoto, we are able to bring together cutting-edge manufacturing techniques and materials with proven G. Loomis actions and design.”

With fast actions and generous power levels, “the Asquith rods excel in situations where developing high line speed and making precise casts means success,” Rajeff said. He notes the rods are built and designed for demanding conditions and technical fishing environments – the culmination of these efforts to provide anglers with fly rods that offer exceptional casting distance, pinpoint accuracy, a lighter that expected blank and reduced blank twist.

The proprietary Spiral X technology creates a rod blank utilizing Shimano’s carbon fiber Infinity Tape core layer, a longitudinal middle layer of Musclecarbon to form a base structure to improve efficiency and performance, and then finished with a reverse-axis Infinity Taper outer layer. This patented construction process increases rod rigidity to reduce twist without adding weight. Spiral X also allows for a thin wall blank, and reduces rod ovalization even when under the load of a big steelhead, striper or tarpon.

Within the ‘all-water’ Asquith rods, the trout-focused  #4, #5 and #6 feature custom bamboo/aluminum reel seats, while the #7 through #12 come with saltwater-friendly aluminum reel seats with Shimano’s lightweight CI4+ material inserts for both lighter weight and added durability. The guide train on all these rods includes Titanium SIC Sea Guide strippers with REC Recoil snake guides.

Also with the CI4+ insert aluminum reel seats and Titanium SIC Sea Guide strippers, the #6 through #10 Asquith spey rods have with ‘Snake brand’ double-plated chrome snake guides.

Rajeff notes that during the extensive rod development, the Asquith 4 through 6 weights performed best when matched with either Airflo Elite or Scientific Anglers Mastery Trout lines. For freshwater situations with up to the 8-weight Asquith, Rajeff suggests the Airflo Exceed and Streamer Float, while the 7 through 12 weights in the salt call for an Airflo Tropical Punch or Scientific Anglers Mastery Bonefish Taper and Mastery Tarpon Taper lines.

Along with the Asquith fly rods, two Asquith fly reels will soon be available, designed and built by Shimano. A known worldwide leader in fishing reel manufacturing and technology, the Shimano Asquith 3-4 weight and 7-8 weight reel feature Shimano’s Hagane Body lightweight machined aluminum frame, full frame design for less line tangle, a sealed drag system, and a lightweight CI4+ material handle. Both reels have two shielded ARB (anti-rust) bearings.

For more information on the next step into the future of fly rods, view the Asquith section at www.gloomis.com, call 800-GLoomis, or inquire about them at your favorite fly fishing shop.

Suggested Retail:

  #4 through #12 – from $1000 to $1200; #6 to #10 spey – from $1200 to $1700

Photo Caption: Greatly anticipated by fly anglers since announced at the IFTD Show last July, the new G. Loomis/Shimano Asquith fly rods series is now available at fly and tackle shops. While the Asquith 5-weight (pictured here) will be the most popular among trout anglers, the series also includes weights for other freshwater and saltwater actions, plus spey rods for salmon and steelhead.
