Umpqua Celebrates 45 Years in Business by Launching the Umpqua Tongass Initiative

Umpqua Feather Merchants has announced an initiative in partnership with Trout Unlimited and the Sportsman’s Alliance for Alaska to raise $45,000 to help conserve and restore key salmon and trout habitat in “America’s Salmon Forest,” located in southeast Alaska’s Tongass National Forest. The Umpqua Tongass Initiative marks 45 years in business for Umpqua.

Read more in the press release below.

Umpqua Celebrates 45 Years in Business by Launching the Umpqua Tongass Initiative to Benefit America’s Salmon Forest in SE Alaska

LOUISVILLE, CO — Forty-five years ago, Umpqua Feather Merchants opened its doors and revolutionized the world of fly-fishing by making superior quality flies available to anglers for the first time on a national and international scale. Instead of celebrating with parties, Umpqua is collaborating with Trout Unlimited and the Sportsman’s Alliance for Alaska to raise $45,000 to help conserve and restore key salmon and trout habitat in “America’s Salmon Forest”, located Southeast Alaska’s Tongass National Forest. As the planet’s largest remaining temperate rainforest, this vast and diverse ecosystem provides critical spawning and rearing grounds for all five species of North American Pacific Salmon as well as for steelhead, rainbow trout and both resident and sea-run populations of cutthroat trout and Dolly Varden.

“We are proud of our forty-five year history and the many ways in which Umpqua has enhanced the fly-fishing world. It’s a great reason to celebrate! But instead of grandiose celebrations, hype, and self-congratulations about our milestone, we want to acknowledge and pay respect to the resources and environments that make it possible for so many of us to pursue our passion for fly-fishing and nature as a whole. The Tongass Initiative is our way of giving back. It is a professional and personal investment by all of us here at Umpqua to make sure that everyone — and especially anglers — can continue to enjoy and experience these pristine and precious environments that make flyfishing an incredible world to work and play in.” — Jeff Fryhover, CEO and President, Umpqua Feather Merchants

Umpqua aims to raise the money through a variety of methods including fund-raising events, donations from the public, the sale of Tongass branded merchandise, and from the sales of its Tongass line of waterproof packs and bags. Umpqua will allocate the raised moneys to two primary efforts. $10K will go to the Sportsman’s Alliance for Alaska to reach out to the outdoor sporting and recreation community to raise awareness about America’s Salmon Forest. $35K will be directed to Trout Unlimited and will be used in partnership with the US Forest Service for a restoration project within the Tongass National Forest. As of this time, the project scope has been narrowed down to restoration of salmon, steelhead, and char habitat damaged by historic logging activity in a high-value watershed on Baranof Island. Before the money is applied to the project(s), it will go through a grant and fund matching program with the hopes that the final amount will double or more before funding the projects.

“Although largely intact, roughly 65 watersheds on the Tongass National Forest are in need of work to address issues associated with past logging and road building. Repairing past damage to these watersheds in the remote and challenging terrain of the Tongass is an expensive proposition. Funding from private sources like Umpqua is critical to meeting project budgets because those funds can be used to leverage additional grant monies and programs. Once implemented, these projects pay almost immediate dividends to sport anglers, commercial fishermen and wildlife in the form of increased numbers of salmon, trout and char.” — Mark Kaelke, Southeast Alaska Project Director, Trout Unlimited

Umpqua intends to work with several companies and organizations to reach its ambitious goal. In addition to collaborating with Trout Unlimited and the Sportsman’s Alliance for Alaska, Umpqua will rely on its vast network of dealers, signature fly designers and pro guides to help further the cause. Umpqua and its partners will work to utilize other industry relationships to promote the initiative through special events and contests, social media and more traditional means of communication.

“This is a fantastic show of support from Umpqua, and will really help raise awareness among the public and our elected officials of the unique and irreplaceable resources found in America’s largest national forest – the Tongass. We’re extremely grateful and honored to be a part of this exciting initiative and look forward to ensuring that the Tongass remains a haven for wild fish, game, and our outdoor pursuits.” — Scott Hed, Director, Sportsman’s Alliance for Alaska

A central component to the campaign will be the recently published Web site www.umpqua4tongass.org, through which Umpqua will communicate news of the initiative and the Tongass to the public. Tax-exempt online donations can be made through the site and will be directed straight to a Trout Unlimited account designated for this cause. An online shop will offer Tongass branded merchandise to the public. 100% of the proceeds from the sales from the site will go directly to the initiative.

Umpqua has also set up a Facebook page, @umpqua4tongass, which will contain news, updates and other information about conservation issues, the Tongass National Forest and America’s Salmon Forest. This page will encourage an open social dialogue between Umpqua, its partners and the public and may also be used for contests featuring Tongass themed prizes and giveaways.

For more information on the initiative, please visit www.umpqua4tongass.org or contact Umpqua via email (marketing@umpqua. com) or phone (800-322-3218).

Conservation Hawks Announces New Angling & Climate Film: “CONVERGENCE”

Conservation Hawks has announced the release of their newest film, CONVERGENCE, which tells the story of iconic anglers and their shared passions for wild trout and taking action against climate change. CONVERGENCE is now touring as part of the 2017 Fly Fishing Film Tour.

Conservation Hawks Announces New Angling & Climate Film: CONVERGENCE

New CH fly fishing & climate change film tours country with F3T.

CONVERGENCE - SilverCreekPreserveTNC

BIGFORK, Mont. – Conservation Hawks, a group of hunters and anglers working to defend America’s sporting heritage, is excited to announce its new angling film, CONVERGENCE.  The short (12 minute) film is now touring the U.S. as part of the 2017 Fly Fishing Film Tour (F3T).

In September of 2016, the Conservation Hawks team spent time on the water with a handful of America’s most iconic anglers, including Hilary Hutcheson, Travis Swartz (a.k.a. “Hank Patterson”), Simon Perkins, Els Van Woert and Perk Perkins.  CONVERGENCE is their story.  The film shares their love for wild trout, for healthy landscapes, for clean, cold waters, and for family and friends. It also addresses their concerns about the future, their desire to protect America’s fisheries, and their unease with our changing climate and rapidly warming planet.

Author and angling legend Tom Rosenbauer says CONVERGENCE is “by far the most powerful, gorgeous, and effective film of all the Conservation Hawks productions. If you have ever waded a trout stream, after watching this film you’ll be ready to do something about climate change.”

The film was shot on location in Montana and Idaho, and is a collaborative effort between Conservation Hawks and Conservation Media.  It follows on the heels of the highly successful Conservation Hawks films COLD WATERS and CHROME.

CONVERGENCE was made possible by financial support from Orvis, Scientific Anglers, Fishpond, Costa, Adipose Boatworks, TroutHunter, Hatch Magazine, Trout Unlimited, American Fly Fishing Trade Association, American Rivers, Backcountry Hunters & Anglers, California Trout, Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership, Protect Our Winters, Flathead Valley Trout Unlimited, ConservAmerica, RepublicEn, Flathead Lake Brewing Co., National Wildlife Federation, and individual donors.

Tippets: Planned Rollback of Clean Water Rule, Wild Trout vs. Hatchery on the Au Sable River, Saving the Everglades

  • Part of the Trump Administration’s newly released plan for energy issues includes elimination of the Waters of the U.S. Rule. Commonly known as the Clean Water Rule, it “not only helped restore protections to streams and rivers of vital importance to anglers, it also restored protections to waterways that provide drinking water for millions of people.” Read more on this issue that has far-reaching impacts for anglers, via Hatch Magazine.
  • Output from the commercial Grayling Fish Hatchery in Grayling, Michigan is threatening the health of the famous Au Sable River. “To me it boils down to: We know this is the most valuable brown trout fishery in the state and this is the largest fish farm,” says Josh Greenberg, owner of the Gates Au Sable Lodge, “With no great reason economically to do the fish farm, why are we risking the Au Sable fishery for a few jobs?” Via The New York Times.

Travis Campbell Moves from Farbank to Smartwool

Travis Campbell, who has been president and CEO of Farbank Enterprises for the past eight years, will leave Farbank and become CEO of Smartwool, based in Steamboat Springs, CO.

Leadership transition at Far Bank Enterprises underscores smart planning, supportive company culture

BAINBRIDGE ISLAND, WA – Jan. 18, 2017 – Far Bank Enterprises, Inc., the parent company of Sage Manufacturing, Redington and RIO Products, announced today that Travis Campbell, Far Bank’s President and CEO of eight years, will become the next president at Smartwool, based in Steamboat Springs, Colo. Smartwool is a wholly owned subsidiary of VF Outdoor, the parent company of The North Face, Timberland, Jansport, Lucy, Eagle Creek, and others.

Larry Barrett, Far Bank vice president of operations and a member of the board at the American Fly Fishing Trade Association, will serve as interim president until a successor for Campbell is named.

“Few opportunities could be compelling enough to lure me away from this wonderful place,” Campbell said. “But those who know me well know the allure of living in a mountain town. The chance to do that, while also experiencing career advancement in the outdoor industry, is just too special to pass up.”

Barrett expressed gratitude for Campbell’s leadership and confidence in Far Bank’s future.

“We have an incredibly strong management team,” he said. “Our company is experiencing record success, and we have every reason to expect that to continue. We can be proud to work for a company that grows leadership talent that companies like Smartwool want to hire.”

The Joshua Green Corporation, an investment company with operations in Seattle, Wash., for more than a century, has owned Far Bank since 1994. The ownership is committed to the company’s strategic plan and fully supports its management team, said CEO Stanley McCammon.

“Thanks to Travis’ leadership and that of the organization’s stellar executive group, the business is in great shape,” McCammon said. “Far Bank delivered record revenue and profitability in 2016, and even better results are expected in 2017. We are full-steam ahead.”

Jay Green, a descendant of Joshua Green and chairman of the JGC board, reflected on Campbell’s path at Far Bank.

“Travis came here as an intern in 2001 and worked his way up to the C-suite,” Green said. “It’s a special privilege to watch a leader grow and develop that way. We wish him the very best.”

Islamorada SailFly Results 2017

The 17th Islamorada SailFly competition was recently held in Florida. Thirteen teams participated in the fly-fishing only event, with Captain Randy Towe leading Bernard Paul-Hus to their second win in five years.

“Quit Your Bitchin” team receiving SailFly Trophy left to right: Mate Robert Morrison, Capt Randy Towe, Tournament Chairman, Sandy Moret, Bernard Paul-Hus and Mate Mike”

In its 17th year thirteen teams of hard core anglers, captains and mates came together to compete in the Keys most challenging sailfish competition. Fly fishing only is allowed according to IGFA rules and using 16 pound (8kg) tippet supplied by the tournament. Any team member on board can tease but only the two registered anglers may cast, hook and fight the fish.

Most boats use live ballyhoo wired to lines from the teaser rods without hooks. When a sailfish is raised, the teasers are pulled away from the fish as the sails follow within fly casting range. Once close enough, the teaser is pulled from the water, the boat must come out of gear and the fly may be cast. If the leader is brought into the tip of the rod after at least 60 seconds, 50 points are awarded. If subsequently the fish is fought to the boat and the fly removed, the catch counts 150 points.

Wednesday morning came with northeast winds of 20 miles an hour gusting to 30 creating erratic 4 to 6 foot seas and occasional 8 footers. Horrific fly fishing conditions. At 9:21 Bernard Paul-Hus aboard Captain Randy Towe’s “Quit Your Bitchin” hooked up the first sailfish which led them out to depths of 350 feet before they were able to bring the end of the leader in the rod tip for 50 points. The fish was lost before removing the fly for the 150 bonus points. Miraculously, three other teams hooked sailfish during the day but all were lost before scoring.

On Thursday winds began to subside to more fly fishable conditions and anyone could still win. Just before 10:00, “Quit Your Bitchin” hooked up again and recovered the fly 40 minutes later for 150 points bringing their team total to 200 points. Anyone could still win. At 2:21 Capt Paul Ross’s 13 year old son Konnor aboard “Relentless” removed the fly from their third hook up of the day for 150 points and Konnor’s first sailfish ever on fly securing their second place. At 3:17, Brian Devries aboard Captain Rob Dixon’s Challenger II removed the fly to earn a third place win.

A total of 12 fish were hooked with 5 fish scoring during the two day event. The Best Other Species award went to Captain Drew Moret who landed a dolphin fishing with teammate Chris Verbiski aboard Captain Alex Adler’s “Kalex.”

Tournament Chairman, Sandy Moret said, “This event is certainly not about gathering biomass! It’s about catching a magnificent game fish according to stringent rules and cherished fly fishing traditions. There are no gimme putts here.” Captain Randy Towe leading Bernard Paul-Hus to their second win in 5 years said, “Don’t change a thing about the tournament. It’s tough, fair and wide open to the end. That’s why everyone keeps coming back!”

The Islamorada SailFly is sponsored by Florida Keys Outfitters, Green Turtle Inn, Green Turtle Wine & Spirits, Kaiyo’s, Rich Products, Nautilus Reels, Sage Rods, Whale Harbor Marina, Pastas Pantaleo, Print Source of the Keys and Riverwoods Art Farm. Tippets: California Salmon and Storms, Comment on Columbia and Snake River Dams, Medication Pollution, Climate Change Moves Fish North

  • While the recent storms in California have been good for the snowpack and reservoirs of the drought-stricken state, native salmon are struggling to survive. “We have eggs that were just recently laid in Lagunitas Creek and other tributaries which have gotten washed away,” said Eric Ettlinger, Aquatic Ecologist with the Marin Municipal Water District. “We also have fish prepared to go into the ocean which hatched a year ago, and they are struggling to find refuge from the high flows.” Via SF Gate.
  • Anglers have a rare opportunity to call for actions that will dramatically improve the prospects for wild steelhead and salmon in the Columbia and Snake River basins. Comment on Columbia and Snake River Dam Operations here.
  • New research has shown that anti-anxiety medication has harmful effects on salmon swimming in affected waters. ‘”The researchers found that when fish ingest oxazepam, it makes them migrate faster and farther—potentially recklessly so.” Via Hakai Magazine.
  • Many Atlantic coast fish species are leaving their native range for cooler northern waters. “Studies have found that two-thirds of marine species in the Northeast United States have shifted or extended their range as a result of ocean warming, migrating northward or outward into deeper and cooler water.” Read more via The New York Times.
