Customers will benefit from TCO’s extensive local knowledge, as they are known as one of the finest fly shops in North America. Orvis brings leading edge product development, expertise in destination fishing, with their international travel department plus their extensive network of endorsed lodges and guides throughout North America to the partnership. And with a large selection of Orvis fishing tackle like their award-winning H3 rods and cutting edge Mirage reels and Ultralight wading gear, plus all the other brands that TCO carries in their vast inventory, fly-fishing customers will have an opportunity to see firsthand the best the industry has to offer.
TCO has been an iconic presence in the fly-fishing world for almost 30 years in their Reading, PA, location. Their brand is trusted by novice and expert fly fishers alike. They have also operated a fly shop in nearby Bryn Mawr for over 12 years, and will relocate into the newly opened Orvis Haverford retail store. This new store will provide unparalleled customer service and an extensive assortment of fly-fishing and outdoor lifestyle gear.
“We couldn’t be more excited about this partnership with Orvis,” said Tony Gehman, president of TCO. “I have always been passionate about the ‘store within a store’ concept in other retail spaces, and being able to bring this to the fly fishing world in partnership with a premier brand such as Orvis is a dream come true”.
“The future success of brick and mortar stores is dependent upon developing new ways to engage with customers,” added Joe Carpenter, Orvis’ Vice President of Retail. “This collaboration with a leading independent fly shop like TCO is one of those ways. We both have a lot of expertise in delivering first-rate customer experiences through travel, schools, guiding services and everyday events, and we look forward to sharing that with our customers”.

The International Game Fish Association Names 2018 IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame Inductees
DANIA BEACH, Fla. – March 1, 2018 – The International Game Fish Association (IGFA) today named five angling greats and industry pioneers to the 2018 IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame class.
Elected unanimously by the IGFA Board of Trustees, the 2018 inductees include IGFA World Record leader Dr. Martin Arostegui, fly-fishing broadcasting pioneer John Barrett, master blue marlin angler Ralph G. Christiansen Jr., upstream dry-fly fishing legend Frederic Halford and modern tackle innovator Frank Johnson. The IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame recognizes extraordinary achievements in recreational fishing by anglers, captains, scientists, conservationists, writers or fishing industry leaders across the globe.
“The IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame honors recreational angling and game fish conservation leaders who have made major contributions to our sport,” said IGFA President Nehl Horton. “From innovative advancements in equipment and techniques to unmatched individual angling achievements, each of the 2018 inductees have written their own chapter in fishing history and their stories will be celebrated for years to come.”
The 2018 class will be formally inducted on September 15, 2018, during a ceremony at the IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame located in the new Wonders of Wildlife National Museum and Aquarium in Springfield, Missouri. Their contributions to game fishing will be forever preserved alongside 121 angling legends, including Izaak Walton, Michael Lerner, Francesca LaMonte, Zane Grey, Mary Orvis Marbury, Ernest Hemingway, Ted Williams, Bill Dance, Mark Sosin, Lee and Joan Wulff, Flip Pallot, Alfred C. Glassell Jr., Skip Farrington and Curt Gowdy.
Dr. Martin Arostegui
Marty Arostegui holds more IGFA World Records than any other person in the history of the sport. He has fished since the age of three beginning in Cuba and then Miami, where he moved as a child. Perhaps his crowning achievement is becoming the first person ever to achieve the coveted IGFA Billfish Royal Slam on fly tackle.
In addition to his personal achievements, Arostegui has led his family to hundreds of IGFA andInternational Women’s Fishing Association (IWFA) records. Serving as an IGFA Trustee since 2012, Arostegui loves giving back to the sport by presenting seminars on the ecology of the Everglades and writing articles in English- and Spanish-language fishing journals with a focus on conservation methods, the use of circle hooks and fishing techniques for everything from bream to marlin. Arostegui resides in Coral Gables, Florida, and enjoys spending his time traveling and fishing with his family.
John Barrett
In 1989, John Barrett began creating television programming that would change the face of outdoor television. It began with a series titled, “Fly Fishing the World,” an award-winning project that was the first fly-fishing-only television series ever produced. The show began airing on ESPN in 1990 and became one of the most popular outdoor programs for more than 22 years, exposing the greatest fly-fishing locations on earth to millions of viewers worldwide.
Barrett spent his adult life searching the world for anything that could be caught on a fly rod. Along the way he was joined by recognizable names such as Robert Duval, Kevin Costner, Liam Neeson, Walter Payton, Chris Evert, John Denver, Henry Winkler, and Michael Keaton, just to name a few. The success of “Fly Fishing the World” on ESPN led to the network requesting more productions from Barrett, which led to “Fly Fishing America,” “Trout Unlimited“ television, the “Fly Fishing Masters,” “L.L. Bean’s Guide to the Outdoors,” and other specials and series that included fly fishing as a core part of the projects. Barrett was also instrumental in the inclusion of fly fishing in ESPN’s Great Outdoor Games.
After more than 22 years of traveling the world, Barrett quietly walked away from television production when he sold his company. He now resides in Missoula, Montana, with his family, where he continues to fish.
Ralph G. Christiansen Jr.
Ralph Christiansen Jr. helped establish the Puerto Rico Game Fishing Association and, at age 30, became the youngest Commodore of the Club NaĂștico de San Juan. He caught more than 700 Atlantic blue marlin, tagging and releasing most of them. Dedicated to conservation, he implemented a catch-and-release policy on his boat in the mid-1970s that continued throughout the remainder of his life. Christiansen became an IGFA International Committee Representative in 1978 and in 1996 he was appointed as a member of the Board of Trustees. He also remained active with The Billfish Foundation. Christiansen passed away in February of 2009.
Frederic Halford
Generally accepted as the “father of modern dry-fly fishing” and the “high priest of the dry-fly,” Frederic Halford is most noted for his development of the dry-fly technique on English chalk streams. Born in Birmingham, England, in 1844, his first experience with fishing was in a small pond in London at the age of six. Halford first began fly-fishing on the chalk streams of Wandle at the age of 24 in 1868. At this time, the dry-fly was still in its infancy. In 1879, he met George Selwyn Marryat, with whom he studied and perfected dry-fly fishing technique and practice for the first of his many fly fishing books. Halford was a member of both the Houghton Fly Fishers and the London-based Fly Fishers’ Club. Halford passed away in March of 1914.
Halford is largely credited for bringing casting techniques, equipment, entomological study and imitative fly tying into the forefront in France, Germany, and America, and his correspondence with Theodore Gordon is believed to have initiated an American revolution in modern fly fishing and tying.
Frank Johnson
You would be hard-pressed to find a successful offshore spread that doesn’t include Frank Johnson’s famous soft-headed Mold Craft lures. An engineer with an aerospace firm, Johnson bought a tool-and-die company in South Florida in early 1970 and began making tackle on the side. His inventions include the aluminum rod butt and certain types of lure keepers, rod holders and outrigger clips. From his mold for a soft-plastic squid came the original SoftHead Hooker. In 2007, his Mold Craft Wide Range and Super Chugger lures were named first and second among the top ten lures of all time by Marlin magazine. He also developed the realistic Squirt Squid, Tuff Hoo and fender teasers.
An accomplished angler in his own right, Johnson caught 1,000-pound marlin, bluefin tuna and countless other billfish. He was also a strong supporter of sport fishing conservation efforts. Johnson was active in the development of Broward County’s artificial reef program, consulted on the development of The Billfish Foundation’s tags and was instrumental in the planning of the original IGFA Fishing Hall of Fame and Museum. For nearly four decades, Johnson was active in encouraging education, advocacy and conservation on the south Florida fishing tournament circuit. Johnson passed away in September of 2016.
“There is no greater reward, honor or recognition in life than to be singled out by your peers,” said Mark Sosin, IGFA member and Fishing Hall of Fame member. “The 2018 inductees are some of the best in our sport and I’m honored their accomplishments are being recognized through membership in the Hall of Fame.”

The Fly Shop® is one of the largest and most recognizable name in fly fishing retail and international travel. We’re proud to announce that we have now partnered with California Trout and The Conservation Angler (two of the American West’s most conscientious environmental stewards) to help support and fund their conservation efforts through our domestic and international travel business.

These two conscientious environmental stewards work to ensure wild fish and their environs are healthy, protected and flourish. California Trout is a nonprofit organization ensuring resilient wild fish thrive in healthy waters for a better California. The Conservation Angler advocates for the protection, scientific study, and conservation of iconic wild anadromous fish populations and the rivers in which they thrive.
This is one of the first of many similar announcements we present and we hope will become a revolutionary conservation alliance in our sport.
The Fly Shop, located in Redding, California been in business for 40 years and is one of the largest and most successful independent brick and mortar fly fishing companies in the world. And after 40 years our reputation says it for us.” – Mike Michalak – Owner
California Trout (CalTrout) is a leading nonprofit organization whose mission is to ensure resilient wild fish in healthy waters for a better California. Established in 1971 by a group of passionate anglers, they revolutionized fisheries management in California through the restoration of Hat Creek and its designation as the state’s first Wild Trout Water. In those early years CalTrout also rallied to establish catch and release as the predominant modern angling ethic. Today they solve complex resource issues throughout California driving innovative, science-based solutions that work for the diverse interests of fish, farms, and the community. They use proof-of-concept project successes to establish precedent, empower partners and influence statewide policy. Through seven regional offices their work reaches across California, benefiting local communities and those who visit California’s beautiful rivers and streams.
The Conservation Angler advocates for wild fish and fisheries, protecting and conserving wild steelhead, salmon, trout and char throughout their Pacific range. The Conservation Angler is a watchdog organization – they hold public agencies, countries and nations accountable for protecting and conserving wild fish for present and future generations – using all legal, administrative and political means necessary to prevent the extinction and to foster a long-term recovery of wild steelhead, salmon, trout and char to fishable and ultimately, harvestable abundance.

Noted small-fly expert Ed Engle is the guest tier for this week’s featured tying video, which features his Bubble Winged BWO Emerger. Says Engle: “Typically I’ll tie this fly down to size 22. Thomas and Thomas has announced the welcome of rodmaker Andy Stone to their team. Stone will join T&T as Vice President of Manufacturing.

Thomas and Thomas Welcomes New Expertise in Andy Stone
Seasoned Rodmaker Joins the Storied Brand as Vice President of Manufacturing
GREENFIELD, Mass. – Thomas and Thomas Fly-Fishing Rods is pleased to announce the addition of Andy Stone as the company’s Production Manager. Stone joined the Massachusetts-based company two years ago, bringing with him more than 30 years of experience building rods for The Orvis Company.
Stone notes the industry has changed immensely over the course of his career. “In 30 years’ time I have seen huge changes in machinery technology. Back in the day you would use a wrench or a hammer to make the correct adjustment, and now you just change the computer program. These machines may look different, but the functions are still very similar.” He adds, “In the last year Thomas and Thomas has purchased all new machines throughout the factory. It’s amazing to see the increased volume of rod parts turning into the rod you will eventually own.”
During his time at Orvis, Stone spent 15 years on the Research & Development and Rod Design teams, in addition to managing a team of associates. Now, as Vice President of Manufacturing at Thomas and Thomas, he is responsible for managing all parts of the manufacturing process, including scheduling labor requirements, process improvements, R&D projects, technical support and other duties.
It’s a skill set well valued by the team. “Andy’s 30 years of experience in rod manufacturing has been key in improving our flow of production and manufacturing processes,” notes Neville Orsmond, CEO of Thomas and Thomas. “He is a fantastic team player and his management style and meticulous approach will be pivotal in our future growth and success.”
The challenges of the role excite him. “One of my favorite things is to be working side by side on a new project or teaching more advanced methods to Thomas and Thomas associates — educating them on how their jobs affect other associates upstream during the rod process. With increased confidence each associate is making better decisions and producing higher volumes of rods, and still maintaining high rod quality.
