Tippets: Jennifer Kelley joins Fly Life, Tying Durable Nymphs

  • Jennifer Kelley, an experienced environmental policy facilitator and natural resources adviser will join Fly Life Magazine as Conservation Editor in May of 2018. She will manage all aspects of the magazine’s conservation voice.
  • Nymphs take a beating not only from fish, but also from hitting river rocks and streambeds. In this post Kent Klewein writes about a great idea for making more durable flies: “One way I increase the durability of my nymphs is to finish off the heads of my flies by folding over and super gluing down a piece of thin skin. This tying technique covers the vulnerable thread at the head of the fly and makes a nice looking nymph wing pad.” Via Gink & Gasoline.

Thomas & Thomas Welcomes Erin Foley

Massachusetts Native Joins Team as Marketing Communications Manager

GREENFIELD, Mass. – Thomas & Thomas is pleased to announce the appointment of Erin Foley to the role of Marketing Communications Manager. The Bradford, Massachusetts, native brings a wealth of experience as a recreational angler and more than three years of experience in fly-fishing industry marketing.

Foley began her career in the fly-fishing industry with Postfly, working as the company’s first official employee and Customer Success Manager before transitioning into the role of Community Marketing Manager at Postfly. In her time at the company, she watched the start-up quickly morph into a global fly-fishing brand.

“It was a great trip,” Foley notes, but adds, “After a few years it was time again to look for a new challenging opportunity. Being a huge fan of the iconic American-made fly rod brand and having met T&T owner Neville Orsmond on several occasions, I was inclined to reach out and see if they needed anyone with a strong digital marketing skill set.” Within a few months, she found herself traveling to the brand’s headquarters in Greenfield, Massachusetts, for an interview.

In her role of Marketing Communications Strategist, Foley manages the company’s social media, blog, email marketing campaigns and newsletters, digital advertising, website updates and other duties. She’ll also be on hand at trade shows representing the Thomas & Thomas brand.

“We are delighted to welcome Erin to the team,” notes John Wolstenholme, Vice President of Business Development. “Her energy, enthusiasm and work ethic are a great asset to the business.”

Erin’s contagious enthusiasm is shared with the team. “I’m extremely excited to be working at T&T,” she comments. “The first time I stepped foot into the factory I knew it was a special place. The vibe here is more like working with family than actual co-workers. I feel privileged to be a part of a team that shares the same values as I do personally — believing in being kind, doing things the right way versus what’s easy, and striving to leave the fishing and local community better today than it was yesterday. I look forward to helping take T&T to the next level and bringing this amazing brand, company, and team back into the spotlight where it belongs.”

About Thomas & Thomas:

Established in 1969 by legendary rod builders Tom Dorsey and Tom Maxwell, T&T’s fundamental beliefs, values and singularity of purpose has remained the same: “The relentless pursuit of innovation, superior quality and uncompromising performance in creation of the world’s finest handcrafted fly rods.”

Instagram and Hero Shots

Hero shots require time to set up and take. And that time, writes Matt Labash, can kill fish. Compounding the issue is the rise of social media and posting of these photos for “likes” and “shares” to the great detriment to the fish itself. Tippets: Rice Farmers Help California Salmon, Snake River Renewable Energy, Washington Bans Salmon Farms

  • California rice farmers are helping foster bug populations in floodplains to help support native salmon. “”What farmers are doing is reconnecting that floodplain natural wealth to the river system where it’s needed,” says Jacob Katz, senior scientist for California Trout.” More fish equals a win-win for everybody. It means we have a system that works for people and for the environment.” Via NPR.
  • According to a new study from the NW Energy Coalition, dams on the lower Snake River could be replaced by renewable energy resources. “The advocacy group says this means dam removal doesn’t have to be a choice between salmon and renewable energy.”
  • Washington has passed a bill that will ban salmon farms in the state, phasing out the process by 2025. “This is a huge win for the public and an even greater win for wild fish,” said Kurt Beardslee, Executive Director of the Wild Fish Conservancy. Read more via Hatch Magazine.

RepYourWater and National Wildlife Federation Partner on Asian Carp Threat

RepYourWater and the National Wildlife Federation have joined forces to help raise awareness about the threat of invasive Asian carp to the Great Lakes.

Read more in the press release below.

RepYourWater and National Wildlife Federation Partner on Asian Carp Threat

Fishing apparel brand RepYourWater and the National Wildlife Federation have announced a partnership to raise awareness of the threat that invasive Asian carp pose to the Great Lakes and their connected fisheries, as well as to mobilize anglers to support solutions to stop Asian carp from getting into the Great Lakes.

“We believe that now is a critical time to raise awareness nationally in the outdoor community about the threat of Asian Carp to the great lakes ecosystem,” said Garrison Doctor, co-founder of RepYourWater. “Every hat or sticker that we can leverage to support and educate on this issue is a step in the right direction.”

The partnership will include fishing hats and stickers specifically designed to increase awareness among anglers in the Great Lakes region about the threat of Asian carp. Additionally, sales of Great Lakes, Michigan, Ohio and Indiana-themed hunting and fishing apparel will help support the National Wildlife Federation’s work to stop Asian carp in the Great Lakes region.

“We greatly appreciate the commitment and partnership of RepYourWater to Great Lakes conservation and stopping Asian carp,” said Marc Smith, director of conservation partnerships with National Wildlife Federation. “With so much to lose if Asian carp get into the Great Lakes and their connected waters, anglers are the critical voice our elected officials need to hear in support of solutions to stop Asian carp.”

Asian carp include species of bighead, silver, grass and black carp. Originally imported into southern aquaculture facilities, they escaped during flood events and have taken over stretches of the Mississippi River watershed and connecting waters. As large, rapidly-reproducing filter feeders, Asian carp starve out native fish species – including popular sport fish. Additionally, silver carp leap out of the water when disturbed by boat motors, creating a hazard for anglers and recreational boaters alike.

The Chicago Area Waterway System artificially connects the Mississippi River watershed to the Great Lakes, where a series of electric barriers are supposed to deter the transfer of invasive species between the watersheds. In June 2017, a live silver carp was caught on the Lake Michigan side of the barriers, though, sparking renewed concerns about the effectiveness of the barriers in deterring Asian carp.

Directed by Congress to find solutions to keep Asian carp out of the Great Lakes, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has proposed a plan to build an engineered channel at the Brandon Road Lock and Dam – a chokepoint on the Illinois River – utilizing a combination of technologies including an electric barrier, water jets, complex sound deterrents and a flushing lock to prevent the movement of aquatic invasive species through the lock toward Lake Michigan. The plan – which is supported by a coalition of 50 hunting, fishing and conservation organizations – is expected to be finalized in 2019.
