ICAST/IFTD 2018 Recap from Fishpond

Fishpond celebrated the wrap up of a successful ICAST/IFTD show with bringing home four awards for Best of Show in Eco Friendly Gear, Laggage/Bags and Backpacks, Chest Pack/Vest, and Accessories under $100.

Read more in the press release below.

ICAST/IFTD 2018 Recap from Fishpond

Fishpond had an incredibly successful week at IFTD to close out the run in Orlando. Every person I talked to was a fan of the brand; from the hardcore fly fisherman all the way to the trolling bass fisherman from the ICAST side of the show. Many commended Fishpond for their continued commitment to the environment, celebrating 10 years of Cyclepond recycled materials, and dedication to thoughtfully designed products.

When premiering our new products there was a lot of excitement about the all new Switchback Belt System, Westbank Wader Belt, Thunderhead Chest Pack, and Thunderhead Roll Top Duffel. That enthusiasm lead to Fishpond brining home four awards at the end of the show!

Award Winners

Thunderhead Chest Pack

The Thunderhead Chest Pack delivers a waterproof carry system created to purposefully load all of the essential gear for a day on the water, including a net holster that seats your long or short handled net perfectly. Bring along what you need, instead of what you have. While it’s a great standalone piece, it also integrates into our backpacks and can be lashed to your boat providing quick secure storage for wet rides. Built out of our trusted 1680d TPU coated recycled Cyclepond nylon, this clean chest pack is built to protect your gear from the elements.

MSRP $179.95

Thunderhead Roll Top Duffel

Nothing puts a damper on a long river trip like a bag full of wet soggy gear. The new Roll Top Duffel keeps your gear dry so you can slip on a dry warm layer at camp and fish the home pool while dinner cooks over the fire. Adventure always has a way of serving up plenty of unexpected twists, flips, and turns, so make sure you pack accordingly. Constructed out of our signature 1680d TPU coated recycled Cyclepond nylon, which has proven itself to be bombproof.

MSRP $199.95

Switchback Wading Belt System

Since our first year we have been turning the fly fishing industry upside-down with innovation and change. As we hit our 20 year anniversary, it was only fitting to take something as simple as a wading belt and reinvent it’s functionality. This system includes a pack that slides independently from back to front, a molded net holster for long-handled nets, a shoulder strap with tool and fly attachment, and options to attach our new molded wading staff pouch, drink holder, and Quickshot rod holder. Functional and purposeful. Can be worn with vests, chest packs or other gear of choice.

MSRP $99.95

West Bank Wading Belt System

Why just have a belt to secure your waders and support your back? We thought about what other functions a belt might serve and we created a purposeful spot for your net, attachment slots for a Quikshot rod holder, a floating “rail” where you can strap on packs, water bottle holders, wading staffs, and all sorts of river accessories. The game has changed, and you can expect more.

MSRP $49.95

TroutHunter Announces New Revolutionary EVO Nylon Tippet

TroutHunter has announced a new line of tippet. The EVO Nylon Tippet adds new technology to a trusted brand, pushing “the boundaries of tippet design to bring forth a cutting-edge new product.”

Read more in the press release below.

TroutHunter Announces New Revolutionary EVO Nylon Tippet

ISLAND PARK, Idaho (July 23, 2018) — TroutHunter is pleased to announce the release of their new revolutionary EVO Nylon Tippet. Adding new technology to an iconic brand, TroutHunter’s EVO Nylon Tippet pushes the boundaries of tippet design to bring forth a cutting-edge new product.

With the EVO tippet, TroutHunter makes improvements over their existing nylon through the proper application of a new proprietary organic coating. The result is much stronger knot strength achieved with no noticeable increase in diameter. Overall, the knot strength is either comparable or superior to many of the same sizes of fluorocarbon.

Additional benefits to TroutHunter’s new coating can be found on the water. The coating adds a measure of durability in combating abrasion while also repelling water, so the nylon will float better than previous nylons. In addition, once the package is open, the coating will protect the material from water and humidity that will enter the spools from normal use, thereby adding to the useful life of the purchase.

Another stand-out feature of the new TroutHunter EVO Nylon Tippet is its nearly nonexistent memory. Even after the material has been tested or bunched up, the tippet can often recover its form with minimal memory. In the end, less time worrying about tippet means more time targeting fish.

The TroutHunter EVO Nylon Tippet retails for $9.95 and is available now at fly shops. Learn more here.

About TroutHunter:

Located in Island Park, Idaho, TroutHunter is a full-service fly shop, guide service, and lodge within view of the Henry’s Fork of the Snake River. Operating since 1999, TroutHunter also offers an entire line of proprietary products, including award-winning leaders and tippet and highly sought after tying materials.

Tippets: Restoring Balance to Alaska’s Salmon, Snakeheads on the Potomac, Dam Removal on the Klamath River

  • In this recent op-ed in the Anchorage Daily News, fishing guide Chris Tobias writes about the suffering salmon runs in Alaska. “King salmon returns across much of Alaska are the worst in recent memory, and fishing closures have touched nearly every corner of the state,” he writes. “Alaska’s salmon systems are way out of balance. We need to take strong measures to help them return to form.”
  • Slated to begin in 2020, the largest dam removal project in U.S. History will remove four dams on the Klamath River. “The Klamath River Renewal Corp. plans to begin site work in two years to remove four dams on the Klamath River and deconstructing the dams will begin in 2021, according to the “Definite Plan for the Lower Klamath Project.” Via Record Searchlight.

Mykiss Studios Launches Online Store

Mykiss Studios has announced the launch of their new online store, featuring apparel lines “that celebrate our passion for the iconic fish we chase and the long roads we roam in search of them – from the Steelhead Highway on the rugged Pacific Coast to the Tarpon Highway in the famed Florida Keys.”

Mykiss Studios Launches Its New Online Store

Seattle, WA – Mykiss Studios, a new studio specializing in creative design services, is introducing a branded apparel line inspired by the fish and waters that define our lives. A fusion of art, conservation, and soul, the store features a collection of designs that celebrate our passion for the iconic fish we chase and the long roads we roam in search of them – from the Steelhead Highway on the rugged Pacific Coast to the Tarpon Highway in the famed Florida Keys.

Mykiss Studios, is the brainchild of Rich Simms, a lifelong Washingtonian who has spent his life exploring the waters of the Pacific Northwest in search of wild steelhead. On one such trip, the fact that the Highway 101 traverses every major steelhead river on the Pacific Coast crystallized in Rich’s brain. That realization spawned the concept of using this well-traveled stretch of road as a bridge that can connect a disparate community and help protect a threatened species that is struggling to survive in nearly every river this 1,540-mile road crosses.

After an inspiring tarpon trip along Highway 1 in the Florida Keys, where Rich saw the parallels between the plight of wild steelhead and tarpon as well as the similar cultures surrounding the roads that connect them, he decided to make this concept bicoastal with the creation of the Tarpon Highway. Like the Steelhead Highway, the Tarpon Highway is clearly marked, but it remains an avenue to lose yourself.

Rich’s life has been a fine balance between his career in industrial design and a dedicated angling life grounded in conservation. With Mykiss Studios, Rich has set off to strike a similar balance by creating well-designed products that express a deep connection to exploration and a firm commitment to conservation – a percentage of all proceeds will be donated to support the great work the Wild Steelhead Coalition and the Bonefish & Tarpon Trust are doing.

After months of dreaming and planning, Mykiss Studios is excited to embark on this new adventure. Stay tuned as we continue to release even more designs in the coming weeks. And please check out our store at www.mykissstudios.com.

About Rich Simms: Rich grew up in Poulsbo, WA fishing the steelhead streams of the Olympic Peninsula, an upbringing that engrained a lifelong passion for pursuing and protecting wild steelhead. By day, Rich is a seasoned industrial design professional with a background in user experience and brand. By night, Rich is a steelhead advocate and can be found in meetings throughout Washington fighting for wild steelhead. Rich is a founding and current board member of the Wild Steelhead Coalition and was named Fly Fisherman Magazine’s inaugural Conservationist of the Year in 2016.

AFFTA Statement on H.R. 200 Passage

The American Fly Fishing Trade Association has released a statement addressing the passage of H.R. 200, the “Strengthening Fishing Communities and Increasing Flexibility in Fisheries Management Act of 2017” by the House of Representatives. “H.R. 200 puts at risk the long-term sustainability of marine fisheries, and the saltwater fly fishing industry that is dependent on healthy, productive stocks,” says AFFTA President Ben Bulis.

AFFTA Statement on H.R. 200 Passage

AFFTA President Ben Bulis issued the following statement regarding the passage of H.R. 200, the “Strengthening Fishing Communities and Increasing Flexibility in Fisheries Management Act of 2017” by the House of Representatives:

Wednesday, the House of Representatives passed – by a slim margin – a bill that seeks to unravel the sensible, science-driven management framework that is working to achieve abundant and healthy marine fisheries. Rather than improving upon the success of the Magnuson-Stevens Act, H.R. 200 undermines the law by exempting some fisheries from limits on catch and weakening the rebuilding requirements that recover depleted stocks as quickly as possible. In doing so, H.R. 200 puts at risk the long-term sustainability of marine fisheries, and the saltwater fly fishing industry that is dependent on healthy, productive stocks.

AFFTA believes a reauthorization of the Magnuson-Stevens Act must focus on real solutions to the issues facing marine fisheries, solutions that are focused on increasing the number of fish in the ocean, and thus increasing the angling opportunities that drive our industry. We implore the Senate to safeguard the economic vitality of the recreational fishing industry by strengthening – not weakening– the conservation and management of our federal fisheries.

AFFTA advocates for and promotes the sustained growth of the fly fishing industry. By igniting consumer demand for products and services, providing businesses the tools to be successful, and advocating for access, protection and restoration of fishing waters, we will continue to enhance the passion and profitability of the sport of fly fishing.

Fly Fishers International Recognizes Fishpond for Annual Conservation Award

Fly Fishers International has presented Fishpond with the 2018 FFI Conservation Award, for “their commitment to the environment, and the steps they have taken to develop and support a corporate environmental conscience.”

Read more in the press release below.

Fly Fishers International Recognizes Fishpond for Annual Conservation Award

Denver, Colorado (July 17, 2018). Fly Fishers International has awarded Fishpond the 2018 FFI Conservation Award for their commitment to the environment, and the steps they have taken, like Patagonia, (a previous FFI Conservation Award recipient) to develop and support a corporate environmental conscience as a company reflecting the owners commitment to conservation. Fishpond is humbled to receive this accolade from FFI for our commitment to habitat and species protection and our ten-year dedication to recycled materials with our signature Cyclepond fabrics.

Conservation is one of the founding principals of Fly Fishers International. Contributing over 50 years of conservation work, FFI is proud to continue protecting fisheries and angling opportunities for the future. As William Nelson, past President stated so clearly in 1964- “We have been slow to realize the role of political pressures in conservation and are of the opinion now that a united desire for the things that are necessary to perpetuate our sport of fly fishing is the only way to keep from losing many of the things we hold so dear”.

FFI’s unified mission continues to this day. FFI’s Conservation Committee works with local club and councils to identify projects worth of funding through a small grants program, and selects individuals and organizations on a yearly basis for their awards program that meet strict criteria.

Each year at the International Fly Fishing Fair in Boise, Idaho, awards are given to various individuals and groups who exemplify the mission and values of the FFI. They take these awards seriously, following clearly defined procedures and criteria.

FFI has been an organized voice for fly fishers around the world since 1964. We represent all aspects of fly fishing –from the art of fly tying and casting, to protection of the natural systems that support healthy fisheries and their habitats so essential to our sport. Today, their mission is to ensure the legacy of fly fishing for all fish in all waters continues by focusing on conservation, education and a sense of community.

Fishpond founder and CEO, Johnny Le Coq, and his equal business partners Ben and Will Kurtz, believe that what Fishpond stands for as a company is equally if not more important than the products they create. Say’s Le Coq, “ Since our inception almost 20 years ago, Fishpond is excited and very proud to be the first fly fishing business to become a certified B Corporation, and together with 1200 other companies in 50 countries, we use the power of business to solve social and environmental problems. This prestigious designation is awarded to companies that use the power of business to solve social and environmental obstacles and meet higher standards of transparency and accountability. B Corporations are a diverse community with one unifying goal: to redefine success in business by making our world a better place to live within, not only for humans, but also for all species. This ultimately means we are legally committed to working for environmental and social benefit, which goes beyond our financial performance as a company. Fishpond looks to the future with a goal of creating a positive difference for our planet by creating innovative products for the outdoor recreation consumer that communicates the importance of healthy species, water and habitat. It’s that simple.”

For further information about FFI, please contact at 406-222-9369 or email conservation@flyfishersinternational.org

The awards ceremony and gala dinner will be held on August 9th in Boise, Idaho.
