Tippets: Women Anglers on the Rise, Maxine McCormick Returns to U.S. After Winning Gold

  • Women anglers are the fastest growing demographic in fly fishing, perhaps thanks to the relaxing escape being on the water provides. “Today, it seems to be more important to women to be able to unplug and be immersed in nature,” says Christine Atkins, from The Orvis Company and a co-leader of the 50/50 On The Water project. AMFF Present a New Exhibition: “On Fly in the Salt”

On Fly in the Salt:  American Saltwater Fly Fishing from the Surf to the Flats

A New Exhibition Presented by the American Museum of Fly Fishing

“The surf: certainly one of nature’s finest edges.” – Russell Chatham, Dark Waters

Manchester, Vermont (August, 2018) The American Museum of Fly Fishing opens On Fly in the Salt: American Saltwater Fly Fishing from the Surf to the Flats which will be on view until Labor Day. From AMFF, it travels to the National Sporting Library and Museum in Middleburg, VA (10/12/18-3/3/19), the Yale Peabody Museum of Natural History in New Haven, CT (5/6/19 – 10/13/19) and the Florida Keys History and Discovery Center in Islamorada, FL (11/10/19 – 2/29/20).

“There has never been a single exhibition that has compiled the comprehensive history of saltwater fly fishing,” says AMFF Executive Director Sarah Foster. “Since its early beginnings the saltwater discipline has graphed a continuing upward climb in popularity. In terms of new techniques, tackle development, cultivation of new fishing grounds, and advancements in biological and environmental knowledge, this branch of the sport may be unequalled in the overall history of fly fishing, and we are excited to bring this story to life through this exhibition”.

On Fly in the Salt: American Saltwater Fly Fishing from the Surf to the Flats traces the sport’s progress through interpretive display cases containing artifacts from the outstanding collection of the American Museum of Fly Fishing. Flies, reels, historical photographs, paintings along with an interactive video component containing interviews with some of saltwater fly fishing’s greatest legends illuminate the history of a pursuit that serves up a potpourri of mental and physical challenges that engender sheer, primal excitement for participants that navigate the glassy mosaics of clear water flats and the fierceness of the open ocean.

The exhibition timeline charts the sport in America from the late eighteenth century, with a nineteenth-century surge of literary accounts of adventurers seeking an ever-increasing variety of fascinating fish. In the 1920s and into the 1930s and 1940s pioneers like Tom Loving (Chesapeake Bay), Homer Rhodes (Everglades), and Harold

Gibbs (New England) were beginning to attract the attention of inquisitive anglers. These groundbreaking fly fishers began their own explorations, bringing tackle designed for trout and salmon to the saltwater bays, estuaries, surf, and even deeper marine zones. It is their work, along with technological advances, that led to the near-explosive development of the sport from the late 1950s through the 1970s, sometimes referred to as saltwater fly fishing’s golden decades.

In the latter half of the twentieth century, the saltwater angling community turned its attention to the fisheries and their environment. Earlier human observations documented the decline of some fish species, and these observations led to the formation of conservation organizations that used scientific techniques to confirm these interpretations and to make direct links between the environment, the actions of mankind, and the state of the fisheries.

The American Museum of Fly Fishing was founded in 1968 by a group of passionate anglers who wanted to ensure that the history of fly fishing was preserved as an important part of America’s culture, industry, and history. In the years since its formation, the Museum has collected, preserved, researched, and exhibited the world’s largest collection of angling artifacts and the world’s largest reference library of fly-fishing publications. AMFF is proud to trace the evolution of American saltwater fly fishing with this landmark exhibit.

The American Museum of Fly Fishing is open from 10AM – 4 PM, Tuesday – Sunday from May through October and Tuesday – Saturday from November through June. In celebration of its 50th Anniversary, admission is free on Fridays in 2018.

For more information about the Museum please visit our website amff.org or connect with us on Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.

Tippets: Choosing the Right Leader Length, Give Fish a Break in Hot Weather

  • Choosing the right length of leader can be a confusing process for anglers new to the sport. In this helpful video, Dave Lovell of Trouts Fly Fishing in Denver, Colorado, breaks down the topic to help understand what leader length is right for you and your fishing conditions.
  • Across the country, late summer conditions often mean low flows and high temperatures. With that in mind, Justin Pickett urges anglers to not put added stress on trout. Fish early morning hours and not fishing at all when water passes 67 degrees Fahrenheit. “It’s hard to get up on a beautiful morning and resist the urge to toss a few bugs,” he writes, “but the trout will thank you and the fishery will be better for it.” Via Gink & Gasoline.

Major Victory for Rivers and Clean Water

American Rivers has won their lawsuit against the Trump administration’s attempt to suspend the Clean Water Rule. “The court made clear that the Trump administration cannot ignore the law, science, or the views of the American people in its rush to undermine protection of rivers and clean water,” says Bob Irvin, President and CEO of American Rivers.

Read more in the press release below.

Major Victory for Rivers and Clean Water

From American Rivers:

On August 16, American Rivers won a huge victory in our lawsuit challenging the Trump administration’s attempt to suspend the Clean Water Rule.

“This is a tremendous win for protecting rivers, wetlands and clean drinking water nationwide,” said Bob Irvin, President and CEO of American Rivers. “The court made clear that the Trump administration cannot ignore the law, science, or the views of the American people in its rush to undermine protection of rivers and clean water.”

What’s the Clean Water Rule?

The Clean Water Rule is an Obama-era rule that protects the small streams and wetlands that are the drinking water sources for one in three Americans. Safeguarding these waters is critical, not only for our drinking water, but for flood protection and fish and wildlife habitat. The rule protects streams and wetlands from pollution, filling, and other degradation that would harm the environment and downstream communities.

The Court Ruling

The federal district court in South Carolina granted our motion for summary judgment, ruling that the administration’s attempted suspension of the rule failed to comply with the rulemaking requirements of the Administrative Procedure Act.

Specifically, the court ruled that the administration failed to provide adequate opportunity for the public to comment on the proposed suspension and failed to consider the merits of the Clean Water Rule before trying to suspend it.  The court said that, while administrations and regulatory priorities may change, they must comply with the law in making those changes. The court issued a nationwide injunction against the suspension of the Clean Water Rule because of the national impact on rivers and wetlands. The court cited the affidavit of Bob Irvin, American Rivers CEO, in which he listed the many different states where he has fished that would be affected by the suspension of the Clean Water Rule.

What’s Next?

The federal district court’s decision is not the final word.  The administration or industry will likely appeal the decision, other litigation is ongoing, and the administration will undoubtedly continue its efforts to repeal and replace the Clean Water Rule.  Also, there is are other injunctions in place from two other lawsuits brought by several states, blocking the implementation of the Clean Water Rule in 24 states. Ultimately, these issues will be resolved by the Supreme Court, by Congress, or by a future administration.  But today’s ruling makes clear that the current administration, like any other, is bound by law in pursuing its effort to repeal and replace the Clean Water Rule.

Special thanks to the Southern Environmental Law Center which is representing American Rivers in this litigation.

Tippets: Florida’s Red Tide Declared State of Emergency, Beavers as Ecosystem Engineers

  • Florida Gov. Rick Scott has declared a state of emergency in seven Florida counties due to the toxic algae bloom that continues to kill marine life in the state. While occasional fish die-offs are a natural phenomenon, there’s a more disturbing aspect to the severity and length of this particular event. “Florida’s landscape and the flow of water have been radically altered by agriculture, canals, ditches, dikes, levees and the sprawling housing developments that have sprouted as the state’s population has boomed,” writes Joel Achenbach in The Washington Post.
  • From creating pools that sustain salmon populations to helping mediate effects of climate change, beavers are the “ultimate ecosystem engineers,” writes Ben Goldfarb. Read more about how beavers are an integral part of healthy watersheds via The Sierra Club.
