  • The latest episode of Loon Live is a great intro to tying baitfish patterns, as well as a tutorial on a box-filling caddis pupa. Watch here.
  • In this article, Aaron Smith writes about his trip to Pyramid Lake, providing plenty of great advice for other anglers planning a trip. “Pyramid Lake is one of the largest natural lakes in Nevada, with salty waters that are home to some truly impressive trout. The fishing methods can be as unusual as the rock formations that surround it, and its shores are often very gradual and speckled with ladders. It’s a unique place, that offers a unique reward.” Via Orvis.

Tippets: One Fly Nymphing Rig, Tenkara Angler Fall Issue

  • A two fly nymph rig can often be productive. But there are situations, writes Domenick Swentosky, when one fly is best. “Two nymphs often land in two different seams. The upper fly might land in a fast lane and the point fly in a slower one. And we may think our dead drift is solid. But on a short drift, neither of those flies ever gets a chance to settle into the seam and do its thing.” Via Troutbitten.

Winston Pro – Staffer, Stig Vivelid-Nilssen, of Norway, Shares His New Winston PURE Video

“Say hi and thanks to everyone in Twin Bridges. I must say, this 9′ 4wt PURE is “me”.  Totally in love from first swing. This will be my new “go to” rod on almost every trout fishing trip I guess.

I’ll make excuses all the time to bend this beauty.

And what a nymphing/shortline strobing upstream fishing pockets this is. I hate to say this: my favorite !!”

Landon Mayer, Winston Pro Advisor, Discovers the New Winston PURE

“Fly fishing is a combination of many art forms. In this product the art of dry fly fishing comes together with the art of rod making to create the fly fishers equivalent of “Pure” satisfaction. Aptly named, Winston has delivered a true winner with this one.”

Landon Mayer
Florissant, CO

Lost Coast Outfitters Reviews the New Winston PURE

“The PURE is a really special, really sweet, really smooth new series of trout rods from Winston.”

It has a moderately fast action that is going to allow you to be extremely versatile on the trout stream… But where this rod really shows its soul is when you lengthen the leader, put on a small dry fly and start fishing to that rising trout in the evening and the low light.”

FACES OF WINSTON/BAUER – Meet Leslie Clark, Marketing

Leslie grew up north of Chicago and in the early 70s, moved to the wilds of Montana, where she met her husband and they raised their family. She started working at Winston 29 years ago in 1989, when her youngest started kindergarten.

Like many new employees at Winston, her first job at Winston was buffing reel seat fittings when Winston was still located in the old shop located behind the bank in Twin Bridges.

After a few months, she moved into the coating department where she worked for the next 10 years as department manager. Her favorite part of the job was hand inscribing the rods, though to see her current penmanship – you’d wonder what happened!

In 2000, she took a semester of computer 101 at the college in Dillon and moved to the front offices when there was an opening. In the last 18 years, her responsibilities have morphed from receptionist to marketing as well as assisting the customer service/sales staff.   In her off hours, she enjoys travel and time with friends and family. For Leslie, the best parts of her job are working with her Winston family and working for such a world-renown company that is located in the small town of Twin Bridges, Montana.

Active Interest Media Acquires Fly Fishing Film Tour

Active Interest Media has announced the acquisition of the Fly Fishing Film Tour, the original and largest annual showcase of fly fishing films. F3T will now be operated under AIM’s Warren Miller Entertainment group.

Read more in the press release below.

Active Interest Media Acquires Fly Fishing Film Tour

From F3T:

Active Interest Media (AIM, aimmedia.com) announced today that it has acquired the Fly Fishing Film Tour (F3T, flyfilmtour.com). Also based in Boulder, Colo., F3T is the original and largest annual showcase of fly fishing films, reaching more than 85,000 attendees through more than 160 live events across six countries. F3T will be operated under AIM’s Warren Miller Entertainment group.

With this acquisition, the two Boulder-based companies fortified a long-standing collaborative relationship. F3T principles Ryan Thompson, Chris Keig, and Doug Powell are all former Warren Miller Entertainment employees who have worked diligently to create this niche category of action sports film and consumer event programming over the last decade and will remain at the helm of F3T heading into this spring’s tour.

“The addition of the Fly Fishing Film Tour to our consumer event portfolio is a natural fit,” said Andy Hawk, Managing Director for AIM’s Mountain Group and Warren Miller Entertainment. “Ryan, Chris, and Doug have built an incredible business using a familiar model, and we are excited to add our resources to the mix to continue to grow the audience for these great films and events.”

Along with Warren Miller Entertainment, AIM will engage the horsepower of the Anglers Journal family of brands, including Anglers Journal TV. The show, based on the successful launch of Anglers Journal magazine, airs Sunday mornings on the Discovery Channel.

“The chance to bring the Warren Miller and Anglers Journal audiences into the F3T family means more folks being inspired to get out on the water, more traffic in fly shops, and more awareness building and fundraising opportunities for fishing-related conservation and charities,” said F3T’s Ryan Thompson. “It is an exciting opportunity for our whole sport.”

In addition to showcasing world-class fly fishing films, the F3T is dedicated to supporting the independent filmmakers, fly shops, and conservation groups that form the backbone of the fly fishing industry’s educational and environmental efforts. In 2018, F3T premieres raised over $500,000 for conservation and fishing-related charities including Trout Unlimited, Casting for Recovery, Project Healing Waters, Bonefish Tarpon Trust, and many more.

BTT Establishes Lefty Kreh Conservation Memorial Fund in Partnership with TU

Coral Gables, FL – Bonefish & Tarpon Trust, in partnership with Trout Unlimited, is pleased to announce the establishment of the Lefty Kreh Memorial Conservation Fund in memory of legendary angler and instructor Bernard “Lefty” Kreh.

“Lefty made us all better fly casters and did so while keeping a smile on our faces,” said BTT President and Chief Executive Officer Jim McDuffie. “He was instrumental in the growth and development of our organization. As an ambassador of recreational fishing, he inspired generations of anglers to be better stewards of our fisheries.”

Kreh, one of the pre-eminent anglers of his day, was influential across freshwater and saltwater fly-fishing, beginning with paradigm-shifting casting techniques that revolutionized the sport. Through numerous books, articles, videos and public appearances, he became the most acclaimed fly-fishing instructor our sport has ever known, sharing his knowledge with countless anglers around the world.

In addition to writing and teaching, Kreh played many other roles that further enhanced his legend and legacy. He was a former director of the famed Metropolitan Fishing Tournament in South Florida, a recurring cast member of the Buccaneers & Bones television program, creator of the popular “Lefty’s Deceiver” fly, and enshrined in the International Game Fish Association Hall of Fame

“We are honored to help carry on the legacy of Lefty Kreh—one of the greatest angler-conservationists the planet has ever known,” said Chris Wood, President and Chief Executive Officer of Trout Unlimited.

The Lefty Kreh Memorial Conservation Fund will provide support to important conservation projects advanced by BTT and TU, including joint projects by the two organizations that reflect the fishing continuum in most anglers’ lives, from coldwater fisheries to the flats and back again.

Tippets: Zinke Protects Yellowstone Gateway from Mining Interests, Atlantic Salmon Navigation, Roadless Rules in the Tongass

  • Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke has announced a mining ban that will withdraw 30,000 acres near Yellowstone National Park from mineral leasing for the next 20 years. “We could not be happier with Secretary Zinke’s decision to protect the true source of economic value to the communities of the Yellowstone Gateway,” said Ben Bulis, AFFTA president.
  • A new study has shown that Atlantic salmon, much like Pacific salmon, use the Earth’s magnetic field as a navigational tool. “The findings suggest that Atlantic salmon, which are widely used in aquaculture, may have greater potential to navigate and thus invade novel habitats if they escape their pens, researchers say.” Via Phys.org.

Costa Marks 35 Years in Business With 35 Beach Cleanups Across the Country

Costa Marks 35 Years in Business With 35 Beach Cleanups Across the Country

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – October 2, 2018 – Costa Sunglasses® will celebrate 35 years of providing anglers and outdoor enthusiasts with the best sunglasses on the planet by joining forces with the Surfrider Foundation, and hosting beach cleanups in 35 locations throughout the U.S. in 2018.

“We were born on the water, so it makes sense for us to celebrate this milestone protecting what we love,” said Holly Rush. “Since 1983, Costa has been committed to conservation and the preservation of our most precious assets—our oceans and waterways. Our team was excited to kick-off our 35th Anniversary with a beach cleanup on International Coastal Cleanup Day right here in our hometown of Daytona Beach where 120 people gathered together to collect and properly discard of more than 150 pounds of trash.”

The 2018 collaboration with the Surfrider Foundation expands upon Costa’s commitment to Kick Plastic, a campaign that launched in 2014. The Kick Plastic idea stemmed from the Costa team seeing an increasing amount of plastic pollution in our waterways and oceans. As an organization committed to conservation, it became shockingly clear that something needed to be done to fight back against unnecessary single-use plastic pollution.

In 2016 the Kick Plastic initiative grew to include a Guide & Outfitter Program. To date, the program has helped to eliminate more than one million single-use plastic water bottles from guide boats and outfitters throughout North America. The Kick Plastic initiative along with Costa’s launch of the new Untangled Collection, sunglass frames made entirely from recycled fishing nets, represent the company’s next step in finding impactful, sustainable ways to help eliminate plastic pollution from our oceans and waterways.

“We are grateful that Costa has decided to celebrate its 35th anniversary through a series of joint beach cleanups across the country,” said Dr. Chad Nelsen, CEO of the Surfrider Foundation. “Beach cleanups not only clean our beaches but they also raise awareness about the plastic pollution challenges we face. Costa’s support underscores their commitment to support clean water and healthy beaches.”

“With about 8 million metric tons of plastic entering the ocean annually, or the equivalent of a garbage truck of plastic dumped in the ocean every minute, we have no other choice but to jump in and make a difference. Small changes add up, whether it’s reducing our single-use plastic consumption, participating in a beach cleanup or spreading the word and building awareness, we can kick this habit and help clean up our oceans and waterways,” said Rush.

The public is welcome and encouraged to attend the Costa x Surfrider beach cleanups throughout the year, which will take place between October 1 and December 31, 2018. For details about specific locations and times, visit costadelmar.com/35years.

Tickets on sale at altitudetickets.com.

DENVER (October 4, 2018)Outdoor Channel and Sportsman Channel, in cooperation with Fly Fisherman magazine, will celebrate the world premiere of the documentary film One Path: The Race to Save Mongolia’s Giant Salmonids at the Paramount Theatre in Denver on November 4 at 5:30 p.m.

Join Fly Fisherman magazine publisher and editor Ross Purnell as he embarks on an epic journey by horse, camel and raft through Mongolia, the land once ruled by historic warrior and emperor Genghis Khan, in search of the fly-fishing experience of a lifetime and the giant, freshwater salmonid species known as Taimen.

Purnell documented his journey in hope of calling attention to the plight of the giant trout-like fish (trout, salmon, char) that face potential extinction from the region because of overfishing, toxic mining practices, along with the construction of roads and dams infiltrating the pristine country and waters that are home to this rare species. Along the way, Purnell and his team also befriended and taught local men, women and children how to fly fish, provided them with equipment and supplied key medical and dental provisions to aid the Mongolian tribal people who live along the rivers.

“This experience is the culmination of a dream of fly-fishing for this elusive apex predator in its natural environment of Mongolia, as well as call attention to the real conservation issues facing the species, educate tribal villagers living along the rivers on how to fly fish and provide medical and dental aid to this somewhat forgotten group of descendants from one of the world’s once most powerful and historic empires,” Purnell said.

The film premiere of One Path: The Race to Save Mongolia’s Giant Salmonids also is a celebration of Fly Fisherman magazine’s 50th Anniversary of publication. All ticket proceeds from the event premiere will go to The Taimen Fund. Along with the film premiere, a silent auction benefitting The Taimen Fund will take place and include: original works by artists Garrison Doctor and Josh Udesen; a special-edition drift boat from Boulder Boat Works; a trip to Mongolia provided by Mongolia River Outfitters; and much more.

Special guests will include: Taimen researcher Lanie Galland (University of Nevada, Reno) and Mongolian fishing guides Battulga Tumenjargal and Жангар Батаахүү (Janger). Both guides are featured in the film and are traveling to Denver from Mongolia to participate in the film premiere.

Music will be provided by Coral Creek and SweetWater Brewing Company will unveil a special new beer. Tickets are on sale at altitudetickets.com.

The film will debut on television on Outdoor Channel, November 19 at 8 p.m. ET and air on Sportsman Channel, December 15 at 5 p.m. ET.

The Spiritual Loss of Salmon

In this recent op-ed, Idaho fishing guide Jerry Myers writes about the importance of salmon to the history and ecosystems of the Northwest, as well as to him personally. “I struggle to find words to accurately describe to others what these fish mean to us. We simply cannot assign a value to that innate part of ourselves that needs wildlife and wild fish, and we should never attempt to do so.” Via The Post Register.

Tippets: Fish Farm Rejected on Au Sable, Steelhead Life Cycle, Observations of Climate Change

  • In a big win for the Au Sable River, “Harrietta Hills, the company operating the Grayling Fish Farm, has agreed to end its lease, to cease all operations at the Grayling Fish Hatchery by December 31, and to never again operate any fish farming operation in the Au Sable watershed.” Via Au Sable Anglers.
  • Recent research from Simon Fraser University has found that the life-cycle of steelhead trout  responds to changes in temperature and numbers of other species of salmon. “Researchers found that the steelhead trout age of migration, as well as their size and numbers, is controlled by a combination of temperature, co-occurring salmon, and other factors.”
  • Writer and outdoorsman Johnny Carrol Sain reflects on the changes he observes in nature and wonders whether what we once thought of as timeless will remain in the face of climate change. “It’s all merely anecdotal evidence, of course, something I’m loathe to use as proof of anything. But in our day-to-day existence as merely humans, what else do we have to make sense of our world?” Via Hatch Magazine.
