AFFTA celebrates resounding win for public lands and waters

U.S. House of Representatives passes historic lands package 363 – 62.

Following the decisive support of S. 47 by the Senate, the House will now send the Natural Resources Management Act to the President with their resounding approval, acknowledging the tremendous value of our nation’s public lands and waters and outdoor economy.

“We’re one step closer to ensuring that our nation’s proud legacy of protecting our public lands and waters becomes permanent”, says Ben Bulis, AFFTA President. “Our industry is grateful for the bipartisan leadership in both the House and Senate and their determined, vital commitment to ensuring that this uniquely American hallmark will benefit each and every one of us for generations to come.”

In addition to permanent reauthorization of the LWCF and the Yellowstone Gateway Protection Act, the Lands Package contains a host of additional provisions that represent some of the most pressing public lands legislation, effectively impacting almost every county in every state across the country.

“The voice of our industry and of the 10 million fly anglers that enjoy access to our nation’s public lands and waters were not simply heard, they made a difference. It’s our hope that this historic step signals a long-term, shared dedication within our leadership to conserve, restore, and protect our natural resources for the benefit of everyone.”

PEBBLE MINE: Draft Environmental Impact Statement Released

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has released its Draft Environmental Impact Statement on the proposed Pebble Mine. “While we are still digesting the technical materials in the DEIS,” says Save Bristol Bay, “immediate problems stand out.”

Read more in the press release below.

PEBBLE MINE: Draft Environmental Impact Statement Released

From Save Bristol Bay:

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers released its Draft Environmental Impact Statement today and we have serious concerns. The DEIS is a government document describing the environmental risks of a proposed project, and is one of the biggest steps toward an agency making a permitting decision.

While we are still digesting the technical materials in the DEIS, immediate problems stand out. The document is riddled with pro-Pebble bias. For instance, when discussing social and economic impacts, the Army Corps focuses on the importance of copper to the global economy over the importance of renewable subsistence resources to Alaskans. The DEIS fails to even address the prospect of a catastrophic tailings dam failure, which is the single-largest danger associated with Pebble. Earthen tailings dams fail all the time. The firm that designed the Pebble dam was responsible for Mount Polley Mine’s dam, which failed in 2014.

The proposed public comment period is completely inadequate. The public needs more than 90 days to review 3,000+ pages of technical information. This is yet another indication the Army Corps is rushing toward approving a mine.

A reasonable DEIS would not have these immediate, glaring issues. It is deeply concerning that the Army Corps appears to favor a mine in this process. That is not their job. This is supposed to be an impartial and scientific process, and at this point it does not appear to be.

Given the failure of the Army Corps to meet its statutory mandate in evaluating this mine, it is time to explore our options for action.

The public comment period opens on March 1. It is crucial for everyone reading this to submit comments to the Army Corps. These comments are the foundation of our efforts to force the government to go back and do the job right.

We need to demand accountability at all levels of government. Sen. Lisa Murkowski has consistently said she wants a robust permitting process that involves Alaskans and addresses their concerns. This DEIS fails to meet that standard and Lisa Murkowski needs to know you care. She holds an important gavel in the Senate and can demand answers from executive agencies that are failing Alaskans.

Tippets: Environmental Review Released of Pebble Mine, Resurrecting the Greenback, Climate Change and Ocean Color

  • The Trump administration has released the first draft environmental review of the controversial Pebble Mine. “The report is a key step in the regulatory process and will lead to a 90-day public comment period for the Southwest Alaska mine that has been in the works for more than a decade, the U.S. Army Corps said Wednesday.” Via Anchorage Daily News.
  • Lindsay Fendt reports on the work that continues in effort to restore greenback cutthroat trout populations in Colorado. “Whether the future form of Colorado’s state fish is a genetically hobbled version of its past self or a manipulated super greenback, it will need to weather changes both to its environment and to the whims of the people who safeguard it. To truly survive, the greenback will have to adapt on its own.” Via bioGraphic.
  • A new study recently published in the journal Nature Communications indicates that climate change will not only change the temperature of the oceans, but the color too. “Researchers modeled predicted climate change through the year 2100 and they think by then, 50 percent of the planet’s ocean water will have shifted in color.” Via Adventure Journal.

Indifly Announces “Kio Kio”

Indifly has announced the release of the film “Kio Kio,” which examines how fly fishing on Anaa Atoll  in French Polynesia is creating new economic opportunities while establishing a new ethic of conservation.

Indifly Announces “Kio Kio” — A New Film that Explores How Fly Fishing Can Empower Communities to Conserve Resources

From Indifly:

Indifly is pleased to announce the release of “Kio Kio” — a new film that examines how fly fishing on Anaa Atoll (French Polynesia) is creating new economic opportunities while establishing a new ethic of conservation.

In a collaborative effort between Indifly, The Island Initiative, and the community of Anaa, fly fishing is creating new economic opportunities. “Kio Kio” documents these efforts and follows residents of Anaa, scientists, and anglers as they work to find ways to conserve bonefish populations while developing a world-class fly fishing operation.

“Indifly believes in sustainable local economies that empower communities to conserve natural resources,” explains Indifly Executive Director Matt Shilling. “Together with our local partners, The Island Initiative, we have witnessed firsthand a shift in mindset towards conservation on Anaa Atoll. We feel honored to showcase the leadership and commitment demonstrated by the community of Anaa through ‘Kio Kio.’”

Both “Kio Kio” and the project on Anaa Atoll are supported in part by Costa Sunglasses. Peter Vandergrift, Fly Community Leader for Costa, was on hand for the filming. “We are proud that the partnership between Indifly and Costa has made significant strides to protect the way of life and the biodiversity in places like Anaa and Rewa, Guyana,” states Vandergrift. “This film gives a clear view of how so much in these communities are on a knife’s edge and how without goodwill, good science, and real leadership these projects could fall flat.”

Tippets: Fallacy of Strip Setting, Stretches for Better Casts

  • When fishing streamers, “strip set” is drilled into an angler’s brain. However, a short rod jerk can be equally effective, writes Domenick Swentosky. “Whichever one I’m in position for when a trout takes, that’s the one that happens. On a trout, both methods are equally as effective at driving the hook home, and I’m not about to change over to strip setting exclusively.” Via Troutbitten.
  • A few stretches before heading out on the water can help improve your casting and success. Don’t miss this video from Louis Cahill, demonstrating two stretches to help you loosen up for a day of hard fishing. “Louis jokingly refers to these stretches as “fly-fishing yoga,” but the truth is that shoulder mobility is one of the keys to a good cast. So give these a shot the next time you pick up a fly rod, and see if they don’t help you cast straighter, longer, and more easily.”

Tippets: Fishing Dirty Water, Paying it Forward

Costa Sunglasses’ Untangled Collection Honored with REI Root Award for Sustainable Innovation

Costa Sunglasses

Costa’s Untangled Collected was honored with the annual REI Root Award, which recognizes industry-leading sustainable product design. The award was given during the Outdoor Retailer Snow Show this past week in Denver, Colorado.

Costa® Sunglasses’ Untangled Collection Honored with REI Root Award for Sustainable Innovation

Daytona Beach, Fla. – February 1, 2019 –  Costa’s Untangled Collection received the annual REI Root Award, recognizing industry-leading sustainable product design, during the Outdoor Retailer Snow Show this week in Denver.

Each year, REI celebrates sustainability by giving a brand the award, which celebrates the most responsibly designed, innovative new product sold at the co-op. Costa collaborated with Bureo to create this sustainable collection of sunglass frames made from recycled fishing nets.

“What is so innovative about this collection is that it addresses and integrates sustainability from end to end—through the whole life cycle,” said Gregory Gausewitz, manager of product sustainability at REI.

The raw material for the Untangled Collection frames, recycled fishing nets, is sourced from Bureo’s Net+Plus recycling program. The recycling program works to prevent fishing net pollution by partnering directly with fishermen in South America to collect discarded nets at their end of life and provide funds to local communities for every pound of fishing net collected. In addition, the styles in this collection use other lower-impact materials such as recycled nose and temple pads and recycled aluminum logo detail. The Untangled Collection is part of Costa’s effort to educate consumers about the importance of protecting the oceans, while also providing an option for recycling the sunglasses when they reach the end of their lifecycle.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by REI for our efforts in sustainable product design around the Untangled Collection,” said T.J. McMeniman, Vice President of Marketing for Costa Sunglasses. “Protecting our oceans and waterways is at the core of our brand mission and we take that commitment very seriously – from product design to boots-on-the-ground efforts like beach cleanups and direct partnerships with conservation organizations.”

A leader in color-enhancing sunglass lens technology, Costa has also invested in sustainable product design as part of the company’s Kick Plastic initiative – creating awareness around the single-use plastic issue and looking at internal processes to rethink and redefine how the company utilizes plastic. In addition to The Untangled Collection frames made from recycled fishing nets, Costa offers two other more environmentally responsible frame materials – a bio-resin sourced from the castor plant and a plant-based acetate (Del Mar Collection).

The REI Root Award is an industry-wide guidepost, seeking to encourage companies across the outdoor industry to place sustainability at the center of the design process.

About Costa
As the first manufacturer of color-enhancing all-polarized sunglass lenses, Costa combines superior lens technology with unparalleled fit and durability. Still handcrafted in Florida, Costa has made the highest quality, best performing sunglasses and prescription sunglasses (Rx) for outdoor enthusiasts since 1983, and now its product portfolio includes optical frames. Costa’s growing cult-brand status ties directly to its mission to provide high quality products with a focus on sustainability and conservation as the company works hard to protect the waters it calls home. From the use of sustainable materials to its Kick Plastic initiative, IndiFly Foundation and strong partnership with shark research organization OCEARCH, Costa encourages people to help protect the Earth’s natural resources in any way they can. Tippets: “The Longest Silence” Re-released, Improve Your Sight Fishing

  • Thomas McGuane’s classic book, The Longest Silence, is being reprinted this month, and in this recent article Jonathan Miles reflects on the timelessness of the work. “Twenty years is twenty years, which means thousands of otherwise literate anglers might conceivably be unaware of this masterpiece of fishing literature,” writes Miles, “might now be struggling to express streamside notions and sensations that McGuane articulated better than anyone since Roderick Haig-Brown. It deserves a refreshment of praise.” Via Garden & Gun.

Winston Bamboo Is Back!

After being destroyed by a fire in May of 2017, the R.L. Winston Rod Company has announced the reopening of their Bamboo Shop in Twin Bridges, Montana.

Read more in the press release below.

Winston Bamboo Is Back!

The R.L. Winston Rod Company is thrilled to announce that we have reopened our Bamboo Shop in a new facility in Twin Bridges, Montana.  The old Winston bamboo shop was housed in the original R.L. Winston Rod Company building in downtown Twin Bridges.  On May 7, 2017, a fire started at 3:00 in the morning, destroying the building and all its contents including bamboo rod inventory, machinery and raw materials. Despite this tragic loss, we have been determined to continue our 90-year commitment to the legacy of building the most beautiful, highest performing bamboo fly rods available.

Since the fire, we’ve worked diligently to not only find a new location for the bamboo shop, but also replace all the unique tools, and machinery. After two years of effort, it’s extremely rewarding to get back to work.

Bamboo has been at the heart of the R.L. Winston Rod Company since 1929, when Robert Winther and Lew Stoner first began innovating using split bamboo cane. Lew Stoner’s patented hollow-fluted rod design process allowed us to set numerous bamboo world distance fly casting records, and is still in use today.

We thank our customers for their patience and we are extremely grateful that Winston Bamboo fly rods will continue to set the standard for hand-crafted bamboo fly rod perfection.

Tippets: Declining Insect Populations Threaten Ecosystems, Fish Pregnancy and Swimming Speed

  • According to a global scientific review published in the journal Biological Conservation, the world’s insect populations are in severe decline, posing catastrophic consequences for ecosystems. Declining insect populations poses a great threat to trout populations as well, as Caddisfly, Mayflies, and Stoneflies are species reported to have declined over the past decade. Read more via The Guardian.
  • Recent research published in the Journal of the Royal Society Interface examines how pregnancy might affect a fish’s swimming speed and its ability to escape predators. “Researchers made 3D-printed models of expectant livebearers in their lab, whose ballooning bellies increased their size by as much as 43% during pregnancy. They then measured the drag forces the models experience in water flowing at various speeds.” Unsurprisingly, reports Erika K. Carlson, “swimming was much harder for the bigger models.” Via Science Magazine.

Texas Fly Fishing & Brew FestivalThird Annual Texas Fly & Brew Returns to Plano

Looking forward to spring fishing? Who isn’t? Fortunately for those of us still stuck in winter, the Third Annual Texas Fly Fishing & Brew Festival returns to the Plano Event Center on March 23-24, 2019.

Unique to the Texas Fly & Brew is a focus on microbrewery beer. With their paid admission, festival attendees 21 years and older receive tasting tickets to sample a variety of locally handcrafted brews. Breweries selected to participate in this year’s event include Four Corners Brewing Co., Oak Highlands BreweryReal Ale Brewing Co., Sweetwater Brewery, and Tupps. All of the participating breweries will have personnel on hand to explain what sets microbrewed beer apart, why and how certain ingredients yield different flavors, and how to brew and taste different types of beer. The festival’s microbrew component has become so popular that a waiting list now exists for breweries that wish to participate.

New at this year’s event is a series of advanced courses for experienced anglers. “Folks know us because we reach out to complete novices–to folks who have never picked up a fly rod in their lives,” says Fly & Brew Director Beau Beasley. “Our event draws scores of children, and we have about six times the national average for women’s participation, compared to other fishing events. This year, we’re stepping up our game to draw experienced anglers, too, with unique, highly specialized courses taught by national experts.”

“Introduction to Wilderness First Aid” by Mike Tayloe of Finns West teaches anglers how to respond to medical emergencies on the river.

Author Mac Brown leads “Casting for Instructors,” a daylong advanced fly casting course for casting instructors.

“Casting Big Flies for Big Fish” by renowned guide Blane Chocklett schools students in casting and fishing large fly patterns.

Aquatic biologist Peter Stitcher teaches “Mayflies and Microbrews,” in which students enjoy a Texas microbrew while they learn to rapidly identify aquatic insects.

In addition to these specialty classes for experienced anglers, the Texas Fly & Brew features fly angling experts offering tips and tricks suitable for everyone from the merely interested to the absolutely passionate. Headliners include Jason Randall, Ed Jaworowski, Dave Whitlock, Landon Mayer, Brian O’Keefe, Geri Myer, Joe Mahler, Steve Dally, Jerry Hamon, Fishy Fullum, Fred Hannie, and Matt Bennett.

The Texas Fly & Brew kicks off on Friday, March 22 with a “Bass Bugs & Brews Night,” sponsored by the International Fly Fishing Film Festival. Group fly tying sessions will run from 5:30-7:30 PM at Tupps Brewery in nearby McKinney. Bass Bugs & Brews Night marks the first showing of an exciting IF4 movie in the Lone Star State: Special guest Cory Routh, producer of the award-winning movie Back Bay, will be on hand to share an exclusive, previously unseen excerpt of his movie featuring Lefty Kreh, believed to be Kreh’s last film interview. The excerpt represents Lefty at his best. The first 100 viewers will also receive the latest issue of Fly Tyer magazine. The evening will also feature a free raffle, with products from popular companies like Hardy, Umpqua, TFO, Snowbee, American Angler, and Norvise.

Major sponsors of the Third Annual Texas Fly & Brew include Dallas-based fly rod manufacturer Temple Fork Outfitters (TFO), the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation (RBFF), Fish Partner, and Tailwaters Fly Fishing; additional sponsors include Gordy & Sons Outfitters, Reilly Rod Crafters, and the Texas Council of Fly Fishers International. A portion of the proceeds will be given to support Project Healing Waters programs in Texas. For more information, visit www.txflyfishingfestival.org or call 703-402-8338.
