Second Annual Fly Fishing Museum of the Southern Appalachians Hall of Fame Induction

August 26, 2017, marks the 2nd Annual Hall of Fame Luncheon & Induction Ceremony for the Fly Fishing Museum of the Southern Appalachians in Bryson City, North Carolina. A luncheon meet-and-greet will be held at noon at the Southwestern Community College’s Swain Center at 60 Almond School Road, seven miles west of Bryson City on US 19/74, after which inductees will be honored at 1:45. The museum will be open for refreshments and tours from 4:15-6 pm.

Beau Beasley, outdoor writer and director of the Virginia Fly Fishing & Wine Festival, will act as Master of Ceremonies for the event. “We all need to remember our cultural history, and in this part of the country that includes fly fishing,” says Beasley. “While we look back at those who founded this American pastime, it’s also important to acknowledge those who are leading the way today for the next generation of anglers. I think Bryson City understands this concept, and they’ve done all of us a huge service by fostering this event and this museum.”

2017 Hall of Fame Inductees are:

Bernard “Lefty” Kreh  (Recreation) – Inducted on April 8, 2017, at the Virginia Fly Fishing & Wine Festival for his many contributions to fly fishing: outdoor writer of 31 books, fly rod designer, and innovative fly tyer, particularly of the world-renowned, circa 1950s Lefty’s Deceiver.

Mac Brown (Recreation) – Fly fishing volunteer with numerous organizations; fly fishing guide, author, instructor, and coach; and regional and national leader in fly fishing competitions.

Jimmy Jacobs (Communications) – Author of numerous fly fishing books and articles, seminar speaker, and photographer.

Stephen Edward Moore (Conservation) – Years of dedication to brook trout restoration in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and to the discovery of the Southern strain of brook trout.

Joe M. Messinger, Sr. (Crafts) – Professional fly tyer widely recognized for creativity and wisdom in designing the famed Irresistible pattern as well as other noted creations including the Nitehummer, Messinger Frog or Bucktail Frog, Meadow Frog, Golden Frog, Dogcatcher, Bleeding Bucktail Popper, and Bleeding Hair Frog.

Starr Nolan (Humanity) – Fly fishing volunteer with numerous organizations, instructor, educator, and clinical coach; and regional and national leader in the use of fly fishing as a method of therapy for recovering cancer patients.

New this year is a pre-induction fundraiser at Nantahala Brewing Company in Bryson City at 7 pm on Friday, August 25. Sponsored by the museum and Casting Carolinas, the event is an opportunity to meet the 2017 inductees and raise funds for Casting Carolinas, a nonprofit organization that utilizes fly fishing as a means of helping patients deal with and recover from various cancers. Each inductee will select a beer to be renamed after them during the event, and Nantahala Brewing will donate $1 per renamed beer sold at the event.

Make plans now to visit the Fly Fishing Museum of the Southern Appalachians at 210 Main Street in Bryson City. Refreshments and tours will be offered to the public from 4:15-6 pm at no cost on induction day. The luncheon ($35 per person; children under 12 are $10) requires reservations; email info@greatsmokies.com or call 828-488-3681.

The jacket and bib come fully loaded with popular Simms features including a shingle cuff design, zippered chest pockets, microfleece lined hand-warmer pockets and a tuck-away, 3-point adjustable storm hood in the jacket and YKK® AquaGuard® Vislon center-front zipper in the bib.

Gallatin Flannel LS Shirt

A new windproof jacket graces the fall line with the new Challenger Windbloc® Hoody.  Constructed of Polartec® Windbloc® Hardface fleece with DWR treatment to help shed water, the Challenger Windbloc® Hoody is the perfect outer layer as the temperatures drop.    Two new flannel offerings—Guide Flannel LS Shirt and the Gallatin Flannel LS Shirt—and the all-new Rivershed Sweater Quarter Zip add critical layers for chillier temperatures.

Dry Creek™ Backpack

GT: A Flyfisher’s Guide to Giant Trevally

A new book by Peter McLeod is the first comprehensive guide of its kind to detail fly fishing for giant trevally. The book is published by Merlin Unwin Books.

Read more in the press release below.

GT: A Flyfisher’s Guide to Giant Trevally

Catching a giant trevally (or “GT”) on a fly rod is the pinnacle of flats fishing: highly challenging, requiring skill and preparation. This is the first comprehensive guide to giant trevally fishing on the fly.

The giant trevally is an apex predator, and the way it operates is nothing less than brutal. These ‘gangsters of the flats’ are like packs of hoodlums marauding across the atolls and shallow estuaries. Hunting for trevally in the harsh environment they inhabit needs a certain resolve. The flyfisher’s first encounter with a giant trevally will be an electrifying experience. A GT can destroy tackle and ego, leaving all in its wake.

But once you’ve caught one, GT flyfishing is an experience that any angler will want to repeat.

Selling points:

  • Very little information previously available on the subject of trevally fishing
  • This is the first book devoted to the subject
  • Practical advice on the techniques, GT behavior and locating, tackle, equipment and the world’s best locations for trevally
  • Several thousand anglers from the US and Europe take part in GT fishing each year

Peter McLeod has worked in flyfishing travel for over 20 years and founded flyfishing specialists Aardvark McLeod International in 2005. He has visited over 60 fishing locations in 20 different countries, some of them as many as nine times. He has travelled widely in his quest to find the finest flyfishing experiences in the world. His fascination with the trevally species is bordering on the obsessive and he is constantly scouring the globe for that next mind-blowing hotspot to target these bulldogs of the flats.

Mystic Outdoors Fly Rods Announces Derek Bond as New Majority Owner

Mystic Fly Rods Takes Bold Steps to Increase Brand Awareness and Fly Rods Sales

LANSING, Mich. & DENVER – Aug. 15, 2017 – PRLog — Mystic Outdoors is pleased to announce that Derek Bond has come on board as the new majority owner. A fan of Mystic fly rods himself, Bond is eager to take the business to the next level, strengthening its position in the fly fishing rod market. His plans include expanding both the Mystic product line and the company’s capacity for distribution of its handcrafted fly rods.

“I am really excited about this opportunity to turn my passion for fly fishing into a business investment,” says Bond. “The huge bonus is that the Klein’s will support the day-to-day operations to make sure we maintain Mystic’s excellence in design and craftsmanship. Their knowledge and experience are invaluable assets and their presence means I’ll be able to not only learn the day-to-day operation, but build even stronger retail partnerships.”

Bond speaks enthusiastically about using the promotional skills he has honed over years in the sports industry to grow a robust sales program coast to coast. He stresses the importance of supporting current retailers while developing more partnerships and collaborative marketing strategies. Fly fishing rod retailers who can already attest to the quality of Mystic’s fly rods will be keen to hear his win-win ideas. Prospective retailers will not want to be left out.

Because Mystic Fly Rods enjoys the benefits of the outdoors, Bond believes the company has a responsibility to promote good stewardship. This includes encouraging fishermen and women to tread lightly in the environment, especially keeping streams and lakes clean, and to honor “catch and release” programs.

Building on the Klein’s R&D expertise, the current product line and a great reputation, Bond expects to be offering new rods and fishing apparel in 2018. He aims for Mystic Outdoors to become the one stop shop for both the fly fishing veteran and novice.

AFFTA Partners with Bullsugar

The American Fly Fishing Trade Association has announced their partnership with advocacy group Bullsugar, “to support efforts to restore critical estuaries in South Florida.”

Read more in the press release below.

Fly Fishing Industry Leader to Support Florida Fisheries Restoration and the Now or Neverglades Declaration

August 16, 2017 – Stuart, FL – The American Fly Fishing Trade Association (AFFTA) today announced a new partnership with Florida-based clean water advocacy group Bullsugar to support efforts to restore critical estuaries in South Florida. Fishing in Florida boasts a state economic value of $9.7 billion. As a leading voice for the recreational fishing industry, AFFTA joins Bullsugar in calling for an end to the toxic discharges that periodically destroy fisheries in the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee estuaries, and to water management policies that have caused the collapse of fisheries in Everglades National Park and the Florida Keys.

To boost awareness of government policies that contribute to the decline of these world-class recreational fisheries, and of the science-based solutions that can lead to their recovery, AFFTA will work with Bullsugar to distribute the Now or Neverglades Declaration to members and their clients, and to publicize the impact of Everglades restoration and water management decisions on water quality and estuary health in South Florida. AFFTA and Bullsugar will collaborate to help tackle manufacturers, retailers, and guides understand how to take action and recruit anglers across the US to promote the Now Or Neverglades Declaration and oppose legislation and candidates that threaten the survival of these vital waterways and the extraordinary fly-fishing industry they support.

“The fly-fishing industry has always promoted clean water policy and sound conservation principles, because our businesses depend on healthy fisheries and our values drive us to maintain them for future generations,” said Benjamin Bulis, AFFTA president and CEO. “These estuaries are precious, fragile, and unique. The opportunity to fish here inspires people from all around the globe to visit and relocate to South Florida. Our work with Bullsugar can help preserve that opportunity for their children and grandchildren.”

The estuaries threatened by water management policies include three of the birthplaces of saltwater fly fishing. The Caloosahatchee and the inshore fishery it supports offers some of the richest redfish, snook, spotted sea trout, and tarpon fishing on the globe. The St. Lucie is North America’s most biodiverse estuary, a historical producer of trophy snook and sea trout, where populations of bonefish and striped bass share the same water. And the Everglades and Florida Bay still offer the most remote, unspoiled shallow water fishing in the U.S. Reconnecting historic flows through the Everglades’ “River of Grass”—the focus of the Now or Neverglades Declaration—is critical to the long-term health of all three estuaries.

“This fishery can’t be replaced. There isn’t another Everglades,” said Sandy Moret, renowned guide and owner of Florida Keys Outfitters in Islamorada. “Our industry’s survival depends on Everglades restoration, and with leadership from the AFFTA and groups like Bullsugar, we’ll continue to grow the coalition of fisherman who support the science-based solution to revitalize and protect these waters.”

Bullsugar is led by fly fishermen who witnessed the catastrophic decline of all of these South Florida estuaries within months as toxic discharges and the mismanagement of freshwater caused massive, long-term ecological damage because government policies prioritized drainage and irrigation for Florida’s sugar crop over all other uses. Called in a recent Bloomberg News report “the most influential commodity in the US,” the sugar industry outspends all other agriculture lobbies combined to fund political campaigns and shape legislation. Bullsugar is raising awareness of the costs of sugar’s control over Florida’s water policy, and showing voters how to combat the industry’s political influence.

“Last year in Florida, fishermen rallied around the Now or Neverglades Declaration, which led to historic state legislation to stop discharges and send clean water south to revive the Everglades,” said Bullsugar co-founder Chris Maroney. “That legislation is now in the hands of Washington D.C. lawmakers. We need fisherman across America to understand that the survival of these legendary fisheries depends on their voices. It really is ‘Now or Neverglades,’ and we are grateful and excited for the opportunity to work with AFFTA to keep the momentum going.”

Media contact: Peter Girard: pgirard@bullsugar.org

About Bullsugar

Bullsugar.org is dedicated to stopping the damaging discharges into the St. Lucie and Caloosahatchee estuaries and restoring the flow of clean freshwater to Florida Bay. We aim to empower voters to take back our water and government and to ensure a lasting legacy of clean water and healthy estuaries for future generations.

AFFTA advocates for and promotes the sustained growth of the fly-fishing industry. By igniting consumer demand for products and services, providing businesses the tools to be successful, and advocating for access, protection and restoration of fishing waters, we will continue to enhance the passion and profitability of the sport of fly fishing.

Several Re-elected to the AFFTA Board

BOZEMAN, Mont. – The American Fly Fishing Trade Association (AFFTA) Board of Directors Election results were announced today.

AFFTA President Ben Bulis noted, “It’s great to see the involvement of the membership; we had the largest voter turnout in the history of AFFTA. Our membership continues to grow year after year — we had 12 strong candidates running for five board seats, and all of them should be congratulated for stepping up and running for the board.”

The following were elected (or re-elected) to the board:

  • Ben Kurtz: Fishpond, Denver, Colorado (re-elected)
  • Michael White: Blue Ribbon Sales, Bozeman, Montana (re-elected)
  • Shawn Combs: Orvis Rod & Tackle, Manchester, Vermont (re-elected)
  • Tom Melvin: Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures, Bozeman, Montana
  • Tag Kleiner: Far Bank Enterprises, Bainbridge Island, Washington

The Board welcomes the two new members, who bring a wealth of industry knowledge.

Tom Melvin is the Director of Sales for Bozeman, Montana-based Yellow Dog Flyfishing Adventures, a fly-fishing booking agency specializing in destination angling and travel. For the past seven years, in addition to overseeing sales and marketing programs at Yellow Dog, Tom has also developed and managed the company’s Alaska, Kamchatka and Iceland programs.

Tag Kleiner is the Vice President of Marketing for Far Bank (Sage, Redington, and RIO Products). He joined Far Bank in early 2014 and notes he’s “greatly enjoyed getting more entrenched in the fly-fishing community. I’ve been a part of the community for over two decades, though much more peripherally during the time I spent at Smith Optics.”

AFFTA Chairman Michael White commented, “The recent AFFTA Board of Directors election spurred the greatest member turnout to date. We thank those AFFTA members who cast their vote to make AFFTA stronger than ever. The results of the election assure that the mission of AFFTA to “promote the sustained growth of the flyfishing industry” will carry forward due to the volunteer work, commitment and applied energies of a dynamic board. We thank those who placed themselves as candidates in the election and welcome aboard our newly elected Board of Directors. Together, we will continue to work on behalf of our member base.

The new board members will begin serving their three-year terms at the October 15, 2017 AFFTA Board meeting in Bozeman.

Tippets: “Upstream” with Langdon Cook, Rod Length vs. Rod Reach

  • Langdon Cook’s new book, Upstream, follows the story of salmon. In this recent article on Forbes, Christina Troitino talks with Cook about wild salmon and the threats they face. “Salmon is the last real wild food. It’s one of our last connections to our ancestral identity as hunter gatherers. If wild salmon is suddenly off the menu then that connection is severed. I’m not sure how much people think about that but it’s subliminally there as a connection to our deep past and nature in general.”
  • In this article, Devin Olsen of Tactical Fly Fisher examines differences in reach between rods of different lengths. “I have noticed a difference in the reach I get by fishing longer rods but I wanted to quantify it somehow,” Olsen writes. “As I visualized the problem, I realized that good old fashioned trigonometry could at least estimate the difference.”

Founded in 2009, Cheeky Fishing develops, manufactures, markets and sells high performance fishing reels, equipment and apparel. The company is dedicated to pushing the limits of product design to create fishing equipment that specifically aligns with the demands of a growing demographic of progressive fishermen. To that end, the company launched a second brand in 2014, Wingo Belts, a manufacturer of belts, accessories and pet products geared towards outdoor and fishing enthusiasts. Cheeky Fishing and Wingo Belts are co-located and run side-by-side; the Marketing and Operations Associate (MOA) role contributes to both brands.

Cheeky and Wingo currently distribute product to six continents through a robust dealer network of specialty fishing and “Big Box” retailers, as well as an online direct-to-consumer platform. The company is operated by a 3-person team, including the MOA. Our company culture values a professional and responsible “work hard, play hard” mentality and a relentless passion for business growth.

For more information on Cheeky Fishing and Wingo Belts, please visit http://cheekyfishing.com/ and http://www.wingobelts.com/.

Job Description:

Cheeky Fishing and Wingo Belts are seeking a Marketing and Operations Associate who will assume a leadership role in the marketing, service and fulfillment areas of the business, and assist the Associate Business Manager and the CEO in managing day-to-day business operations.

It is critical that the individual is highly motivated and has the ability to proactively and independently seek out projects and opportunities to grow the business.

The MOA will be exposed to and will lead efforts in a wide variety of business functions, but will focus on marketing, fulfillment and customer service. While the MOA will work with the CEO and Associate Business Manager regularly, the company will rely on the MOA to lead projects and workflow independently.

On average, the MOA position requires 50-60 hours per week, but the right candidate will be willing to put the time in necessary to get the job done, including some nights and weekends. Some travel will also be required, particularly relating to fishing/outdoors events and trade shows.

The MOA will spend approximately 60-70% of their time on responsibilities that arise in the daily course of business, which will include anything from product fulfillment to customer service inquiries to e-content and/or newsletter development to something as trivial as a trip to the post office. The right candidate will be ready to roll up their sleeves and tackle the daily tasks of a small business.

The remaining 30-40% of the MOA’s time will be spent on higher-level projects related to longer term marketing/events, general operations and industry relations. The role may be adapted to a particular candidate’s strength. Specific responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • • Warehouse management, including inventory control/forecasting and product/supply management
  • Warranty and service oversight
  • Working with guides, fishing shops, industry influencers and other industry members to proactively expose Cheeky and Wingo to a broader audience
  • New product development and testing

Qualifications and Experience:

While the MOA position is challenging and requires a passion for business and fishing, we do not expect candidates to have prior experience in every area listed above. The MOA position is an opportunity to develop and learn new skills with the mentorship of seasoned entrepreneurs who have graduate business degrees from the world’s leading universities.

Other experience/requirements include but are not limited to:

    • • Relevant work experience in an analytical or entrepreneurial role
    • A passion for both business and fishing
