Tippets: EPA Upholds Protections for Bristol Bay, Road Approved Through Alaskan Wildlife Refuge

  • Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt has released a statement announcing that restrictions on mining in Bristol Bay will not be withdrawn. “This decision neither deters nor derails the application process of Pebble Limited Partnership’s proposed project. The project proponents continue to enjoy the protection of due process and the right to proceed. However, their permit application must clear a high bar, because EPA believes the risk to Bristol Bay may be unacceptable.”
  • The U.S. Department of the Interior has given The King Cove Corporation permissions to build a road through Alaska’s Izembek National Wildlife Refuge. “Past environmental reviews of the proposed project have concluded that the road would permanently damage the refuge, and recommended against construction. No new environmental reviews have been conducted since Drumpf took office.” The Adventure Journal.

Virginia Fly Fishing & Wine Festival Sets Record Attendance

The 2018 Annual Virginia Fly Fishing & Wine Festival has reported record attendance in its 18th year. “It’s hard to believe the festival began in a single tent alongside the South River in Waynesboro,” said festival director Beau Beasley.

Read more in the press release below.

Virginia Fly Fishing & Wine Festival Sets Record Attendance

Simon Gawesworth, Jason Randal, Beau Beasley and Landon Mayer at this year’s VFFF

Thousands of fly anglers from across the country attended the 18th Annual Virginia Fly Fishing & Wine Festival on January 13-14, 2018. Held at Meadow Event Park just 15 miles north of Richmond on the site of the state fairgrounds, the Virginia Fly Fishing & Wine Festival has grown more popular with both new and veteran fly anglers with each passing season.

Fly fishing manufacturers, lodges, guides, tourism agencies, wineries, and specialty food companies were among the more than 100 vendors who hailed from all over the country. Brian Trow, co-owner of Mossy Creek Fly Fishing, commented, “This was our best festival ever, and that’s saying something. We do a lot of fly fishing related events, but this is one of our favorites, especially since it’s in our home state. We look forward to it each season.”

Temple Fork Outfitters founder Rick Pope echoed Trow’s sentiments: “We were tickled pink with this year’s turnout; it was great to see so many young people. I couldn’t get over how many of the attendees were actually pushing strollers. Ask yourself,” Pope continued, “the last time you went to any fly fishing event and saw dozens of strollers in use. Our company is seeking a younger demographic with customers who are eager to learn about fly fishing. Beau Beasley’s festival concept precisely lines up with our company’s priorities and ethos.”

The highlight of the 2018 event was the Festival After-Party, sponsored by Virginia microbrewery Steam Bell Beer Works and Flymen Fishing Company. The short film “Back Bay,” documenting the plight and comeback of one of Virginia’s best-known bass fisheries, premiered at the After-Party. In attendance were author and guide Cory Routh, who provided the movie’s narration, and famed popping bug designer Walt Cary, who is featured in the film and whose knowledge of Back Bay is extensive. After the film, retired Marine and Project Healing Waters program lead Chris Thompson received the “Virginia Fly Angler of the Year” award for his volunteer service and leadership.

“It’s hard to believe the festival began in a single tent alongside the South River in Waynesboro,” said festival director Beau Beasley. “It now spans more than 65,000 square feet and continues to grow. Because of our sponsorship support from the Recreational Boating and Fishing Foundation, our beginner and women-only casting classes were packed. We also had over 30 Boy Scouts, some of whom came from as far away as New Jersey to earn their Fly Fishing Merit Badges. Our Trout Unlimited Tri-State Conservation Camp beginner fly casting classes, designed to give kids just a taste of what a weeklong camp would be like, were also at maximum capacity.”

Beasley insisted that sponsors and volunteers make the event possible. “This festival simply couldn’t happen without the diligence of our hardworking and dedicated volunteers or the generosity of our sponsors–folks at TFO, Green Top, Steam Bell Beer Works, and Harman’s Cabins, among others.

The Virginia Fly Fishing & Wine Festival will be held January 12-13, 2019. For more information, visit www.vaflyfishingfestival.org. A sister event, the 2nd annual Texas Fly Fishing & Brew Festival, will take place on March 10-11, 2018, in Plano, Texas (www.txflyfishingfestival.org).

Lefty Kreh Update

Lefty Kreh Update:

I spoke to Lefty for almost an hour this morning and he sounded great. Since there have been so many questions about his health, he asked that we publish this short note:

“God and my doctor have given me an extension. Some weeks ago I was put in home hospice care with three medical problems and it was assumed I’d be here a short time. Word about it went on the Internet and my computer and iPhone were flooded with wonderful and humbling messages. I read every one but regretfully wasn’t able to reply to most. My granddaughter used Facebook to handle messages.

My doctor and best friend experimented with medicines and said, ‘I going to try to keep you around.’ So far it’s working. I’m confined to my home, hooked to oxygen and have little stamina. My daughter and son are taking constant care of me and no father was more blessed.

Several computer projects keep me busy. There have been been ups and downs with some additional surgery, which is slowly getting better.

There is no guarantee on how long I’ll be here but am so humbled and grateful for all your wonderful messages.

All The Best, Lefty”

Tippets: Catch & Release in Cold Weather, Fly Aesthetics

  • While anglers must take more care in safety when out on the water in winter conditions, similar concern should be had for caught fish, writes Louis Cahill. “We think of trout as needing special handling care when water temperatures are high, but fish are just as vulnerable when air temperatures are low.” Read more via Gink & Gasoline.

Outdoor Retailer Opens For First Denver Show

From Outdoor Retailer:

Outdoor Retailer + Snow Show, the largest U.S. tradeshow for the outdoor and winter sports industries, opens today in Denver for the first time in Outdoor Retailer’s history. More than 1,000 brands will be exhibiting the latest technology innovations, apparel and gear for staying warm, fashionable and connected to meet with the more than 11,000 registered retail buyers from 50 countries. The show runs Thursday, Jan. 25-Saturday, Jan. 27 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and until 3 p.m. on Sunday, Jan. 28 at the Colorado Convention Center.

“This is the year of many firsts — the first show combined with the SIA Snow Show and the first Outdoor Retailer show in Denver,” said Marisa Nicholson, vice president and show director for Outdoor Retailer events. “We have worked incredibly hard to make this show a success: bringing together two communities; enabling decision makers to see the latest products and trends for next season in one place; offering a diverse and compelling line-up of seminars and speakers; and offering the opportunity to network with the more than 28,000 outdoor and snow industry colleagues joining us here in Denver. The first of three shows this year, Outdoor Retailer + Snow Show kicks off this year’s buying cycle laying the foundation for Outdoor Retailer Summer Market in July and Outdoor Retailer Winter Market in November.”

Outdoor Retailer is showcasing an entirely new format with exhibits spanning all three floors of the Colorado Convention Center. Highlights include next-generation skis and snowboards, rechargeable hand warmers, heated ski/snowboard boot bags, outerwear made from ocean plastic, sustainable and performance fabrics, insulation using technology from NASA, personal lead water filtration, and heated socks and gloves that provide heat for 12 hours, among others.

Of Outdoor Retailer’s offerings, the opportunity for education is what sets it apart from other shows. From the Industry and Intelligence day on Wednesday, Jan. 24, hosted by Snowsports Industries America to Outdoor University hosted by Outdoor Industry Association kicking off on Thursday, Jan. 25, to the on-show-floor offerings at The Camp, the RANGER Station and the Trend + Design Center, Outdoor Retailer + Snow Show attendees will have access to the latest statistics and participation numbers, as well as information on climate change, economic factors and consumer trends.

Luxe is an immersive experience in premium and luxury snow and outdoor apparel. Lastly, the Rental World provides attendees a close look at alpine, snowboarding and cross country rental gear.

Tippets: Breweries and Water Shortages, Salmon Epigenetics

  • As water shortages increase, breweries are leading the conservation charge with innovative ideas. “A stunning success in reducing beer’s water footprint involves a partnership among MillerCoors, barley farmers in Idaho, and the Nature Conservancy,” writes Robert Glennon. “The goal was to protect Silver Creek, the world-famous trout stream near Ketchum, Idaho, by reducing the surrounding farmers’ use of water.” Read more via Pacific Standard.
  • Hatchery smolts have been used to increase populations of salmon along North America’s Pacific coast. “Scientists know these hatchery smolts don’t do well in the wild—the fish tend to die younger than their wild brethren and reproduce less,” but only recent research appears to solve the riddle of why: epigenetics. Brandon Prince Joins T&T as a Manufacturing Sales Representative

GREENFIELD, MA — Thomas & Thomas announced this week that seasoned Industry player Brandon Prince of Last Chance, Idaho has joined the company as a Manufacturer’s Sales Representative. After launching Prince Outdoors seven years ago, Prince—a fishing guide, instructor and teacher with more than 30 years of experience—has built his business to represent eleven companies across the Northern Rockies region, encompassing Montana, Idaho, and Wyoming.  His portfolio includes fly fishing staples such as Hatch Outdoors, Trouthunter, Fulling Mill USA, Adipose Boats, East Cape Skiffs, Rep Your Water, and other reputable brands.

“After all these years, Prince Outdoors is running strong and adding T&T to my binder is a feather in the cap,” says Prince. “When it comes to opportunity for T&T in the Northern Rockies, the door is wide open.”

T&T owner Neville Orsmond agrees: “Brandon is a passionate individual with tremendous drive and an abundance of fishing experience. As an individual, we know he represents all the values we value as a company. His timing is perfect for our sales strategy as we build on the success of recent rod launches, like the Avantt and Excocett. We look forward to some exciting product developments in 2018 and Brandon will be ready to introduce these to the market of the Northern Rockies.”

John Wolstenholme, T&T’s Vice President of Business Development, worked with Prince for years through fly manufacturer Fulling Mill USA. He said, “T&T is delighted to be working with Brandon, whose experience, work ethic and professionalism will be a huge asset in growing our brand in this key territory. He has been instrumental to the success of a number of key brands and will similarly contribute to our company.”

“I fished T&T for the first time on a Louisiana redfish trip,” said Prince. “The accuracy and power of the Excocett in the 8-, 9- and 10-weights were astounding. Neville took on a big challenge when he bought the company and in just a few years has gained so much traction. He’s really committed. T&T’s rebuilding a powerhouse and I’m stoked to be along for the ride.”

About Thomas and Thomas
Established in 1969 by legendary rod builders Tom Dorsey and Tom Maxwell, T&T’s fundamental beliefs, values and singularity of purpose has remained the same: “The relentless pursuit of innovation, superior quality and uncompromising performance in creation of the world’s finest handcrafted fly rods.”

And, it is this purpose which first attracted current owner, fly fishing enthusiast and entrepreneur Neville Orsmond. Acquiring the company in 2014, Neville’s active leadership and commitment to the brand has rejuvenated T&T.  By building a proactive team while sourcing the best equipment and raw materials, Neville has built a Massachussetts-based manufacturing facility with capabilities rivaling any competitor. T&T continues to proudly design and hand build the bamboo, graphite, and fiberglass fly rods you will eventually own.

Keepemwet Fishing Grows Team

Keepemwet Fishing has announced the welcome of two new members to their Fishing Ambassador team: Photographer and writer Jess McGlothlin, and and filmmaker Jako Lucas.

Read more in the press release below.

Keepemwet Fishing Grows Team

New Additions Include Photographer / Writer Jess McGlothlin, and Filmmaker Jako Lucas

Boise, ID — Keepemwet Fishing has just announced two new arrivals to its industry-leading ambassador team. Photographer / writer Jess McGlothlin (Jess McGlothlin Media), an internationally-ranging freelancer, and globetrotting filmmaker Jako Lucas (Capt. Jack Films) have joined the Fishing Ambassador team.

McGlothlin notes, “I’ve followed Keepemwet Fishing since its inception, and firmly believe this is an initiative the industry needs to get behind. Whether I’m teaching fishing photography workshops or shooting for commercial clients, the keepemwet principals apply — and photos of fish in situ are so much more interesting than the traditional ‘grip and grins’. I’m thrilled to be part of the Ambassador team and support this movement.”

Lucas describes, “Keepemwet Fishing represents our conscious efforts in protecting our fisheries and wildlife and ensuring that we educate others and our younger generations.”

The Keepemwet Fishing Ambassador team includes noted anglers and fly-fishing media professionals: Arian Stevens, April Vokey, Brian O’Keefe, Dave McCoy, Jeff Hickman, Jeremy Koreski, Josh Udesen, Mia Sheppard, Marty Sheppard, Nick King, Travis Sylvester and Uros Kristan. A well-rounded Science Ambassador team also supports the efforts: Dr. Aaron Adams, Dr. Andy Danylchuk (Science Advisor), John R. McMillan, Sascha Clark Danylchuk (Science Liaison), Shannon Bower and Dr. Steven J. Cooke.

The Keepemwet ethos states: We believe that as we learn more we have an obligation to evolve our mindset and practices. Thanks to advances in science, we now have a better understanding of the impacts that handling can have on the long-term health of fish. We believe that anglers have the responsibility to apply this knowledge to their fish handling practices and should strive to minimize the impacts on the fish they release.

To this end, Keepemwet provides tips and principles to educate, empower and inspire anglers to reduce fish stress during the catch-and-release process. The tips include easy, common sense practices easy to incorporate into an angler’s repertoire; by incorporating these tips into regular fishing practices, you can eliminate contact with dry surfaces, minimize air exposure, and reduce handling.

“It’s really just a regular old WD-40 but with a split wing case and an emergent wing,” says Tim Flagler of this week’s featured pattern, which he calls the WD-40 Plus.  Notes Flagler: “A single CDC puff is used to form the emergent wing. Tippets: Utah Cutthroat Slam, Catching Cruising Trout

  • Tyler Coleman writes about participating in the Utah Cutthroat Slam, where anglers aim to catch the state’s four native subspecies of cutthroat in their historic range. “As this fish entered my net, the feelings of accomplishment and appreciation were overtaking,” he writes.
  • In this video in Orvis’ Master Class Monday series, Dave Jensen outlines the importance of having a strategy for casting to and catching cruising trout. This is a perfect time to focus on these techniques, writes Phil Monahan, as “During winter and early spring, your best bet for finding feeding trout is in slower water. In slow currents, trout sometimes cruise because the current does not bring them enough food.”

Bale first started with the company in 1987 as a sales rep and transitioned into sales manager for Sage in 1990. In 1995, Bale became the vice president of marketing and sales and held that role through 2011 when he took on the role of international sales director. “Given Marc’s track record with our company, we are sure he will lead Far Bank sales to great heights in his new role,” said Larry Barrett, Far Bank President and CEO. “With his extensive knowledge of the fly fishing space both nationally and internationally, we look forward to having his expertise working in such an essential role in our organization.”

“My main goal is to keep the Far Bank sales team and sales efforts at the forefront of the fly fishing industry,” said Bale. “I’ve learned in the past three months how greatly the marketplace has changed in the past six years while I have been primarily focused on the international scene, and it is imperative that we stay out in front of all of those changes. Far Bank will remain a leader in this space, and I’m here to ensure our sales teams work hard to continue that trend.”

About Far Bank Enterprises:

In 2005, Far Bank Enterprises was created to serve as the holding company for three businesses at the forefront of the fly fishing market: Sage Fly Fishing, Redington, and RIO Products. • New research points to climate change as a factor in causing dead zones in the oceans. “The size of oxygen-starved ocean “dead zones,” where plants and animals struggle to survive, has increased fourfold around the world, according to a new scientific analysis.” Via The Huffington Post.
