Matt P. Libby shows off a gorgeous Maine landlocked salmon. Photo via Facebook The words “legend” and “dynasty” should never be used lightly. How to Tie a Damselfly Nymph

Tim Flagler demonstrates how to tie a Damselfly Nymph in this week’s featured tying video.  “It’s an easy, quick and fairly cheap tie that works well in just about any body of water – making it an exceptional guide fly,” says Flagler. “Rob keeps a rather impressive list of all the species he has caught using this fly. It’s intended to generally mimic a damselfly nymph, which are common to lakes and ponds as well as rivers and small streams.”

Tippets: Spring Streamers, Pride of Being a Guide

  • “Pre-runoff, streamer fishing can be some of the best streamer fishing you can encounter all year,” writes Ivan Orsic. From persistence and presentation to rod weight and mastering the dead drift, Orsic details five ways to improve your streamer fishing technique, via Trouts Fly Fishing.
  • The guide community is often stereotyped, writes Emerald LaFortune, “as a collection of young adults dirtbagging around, making ends meet from season to season, living out of vehicles, thriving on adrenaline and PBR, and otherwise avoiding the real world with its bank accounts and office desks.” But in this recent essay, LaFortune makes it clear the serious nature of the work, and the pride those in the profession should take in their time on the water or in the field. Flymen Fishing Co. announces fly tying contest with over $2,500 in prizes from Thomas & Thomas, Hareline Dubbin, and Loon Outdoors.

Brevard, N.C. – April 13, 2017. Flymen Fishing Company is calling all fly tyers to enter their online fly tying contest for a chance to win prizes including a handmade Thomas & Thomas fly rod.

Fly tyers enter by tying a fly that integrates Flymen’s new Fish-Skull Faux Bucktail in some way (Faux Bucktail does not necessarily need to be the primary material), taking a photo of it, then posting the photo on Instagram, tagging @flymenfishingco, @thomasandthomasflyrods, @harelinedubbin, and @loonoutdoors in their post, and hashtagging #FauxBucktailThrowdown2017.

The Flymen team will vote to choose 1 weekly winner for 6 weeks. Winners will be announced on the Friday of each week. Each weekly winner will be sent a prize pack with product and swag from all four companies involved ($150+ retail value).

“The criteria for winning can be anything from realism to creativity, so we want fly tyers to go crazy with their designs,” said Martin Bawden, founder and head product designer of Flymen Fishing Company. “We love seeing innovative ideas. So far we’ve seen everything from nymphs to Clouser Minnows to giant musky streamers tied with Faux Bucktail.”

At the end of the 6 weeks, Flymen will re-post the 6 winning flies on a webpage for a voting period. After the voting period, the grand prizes will be given to the fly tyers who tied the flies with the most votes.

The grand prizes:

  • 1st place – Thomas & Thomas Avantt fly rod ($825 value – model of the winner’s choice).
  • 2nd place – Hareline Dubbin fly tying dream kit ($500 value – winner’s choice of materials).
  • 3rd place – Loon Outdoors Fishing With A Conscience goodie box ($300 value – winner’s choice of product).

New Tool for Anglers Takes Fisheries Management Back-to-Basics

The Marine Fish Conservation Network has launched a new online resource created for anglers, providing “clear, reliable news and opinions about fisheries management in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.” Fissues.org aims to inform and engage anglers in fisheries management and conservation issues.

New Tool for Anglers Takes Fisheries Management Back-to-Basics

Fissues.org” Seeks to Inform and Engage Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Fishermen

Arlington, VA – The Marine Fish Conservation Network (Network) today launched a new online resource created for recreational fishermen that provides clear, reliable news and opinions about fisheries management in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. Developed and administered by longtime fishermen and advocates, Captain Patrick Paquette and Captain John McMurray, Fissues.org simplifies the complicated fisheries management process for the species that matter to average citizens in order to better inform and engage anglers in important management decisions.

“Although U.S. fisheries are public resources that should be managed with community input, the reality is that the government process is too complicated for most of us to get involved,” said Paquette. “We launched Fissues.org to make fisheries management more accessible to everyone who cares deeply about catching fish.”

Fissues.org boils fisheries management down to the basics that your average angler can understand,” said McMurray. “We want to provide the essential information needed for a conservation-minded angler to stay informed and get involved, such as writing a letter or attending a hearing, which could directly affect what happens on the water.”

The web site will focus on management by the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, the New England and Mid-Atlantic Fishery Management Councils, plus Congress, Department of Commerce and NOAA Fisheries as it pertains to stocks in the region. It will feature those species most targeted by recreational fishermen, such as black sea bass, cod, blue fish, Atlantic herring and summer flounder, which are often the subject of the most complicated and controversial management decisions.

“We need fisheries management – from regional regulations to federal law and policy – to benefit the people and communities that rely on healthy oceans and productive fisheries,” said Robert C. Vandermark, executive director of the Network. “Creating this online tool for anglers is one of the many ways we hope to get fishermen more engaged in the decisions that affect them most.”

The Network is piloting Fissues.org in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, and may extend its fisheries management coverage to other regions in the future.

About

The Marine Fish Conservation Network is a coalition of commercial and recreational fishing associations, regional and national conservation groups, aquaria, and marine science organizations committed to sustaining fish populations, healthy marine ecosystems, and robust fishing communities. Tippets: Climate Change Rerouting Rivers, Wetland Grasses Dying on Louisiana Coast, Drilling in National Parks

  • A team of scientists have recorded the first documented case of river reorganization as a result of human-caused climate change. In 2016 a stream flowing through the Kaskawulsh Glacier in Kluane National Park, Yukon, began draining “in a different direction than normal, resulting in the Slims River water being rerouted to a different river system,” as a result of retreating glaciers. Via The Washington Post.
  • A wetland grass called Roseau cane is dying at an unprecedented rate along the Louisiana coast and invasive aphids may be to blame. The marshland grasses are vital habitat for young fish. Read more from Jonathan Wright via Fly Fisherman.
  • Iconic national parks such as the Great Sand Dunes, the Everglades, and the Grand Tetons are in danger of becoming hotspots for oil and gas drilling in the United States. “In late March, President Trump signed his 19th executive order, titled “Promoting Energy Independence and Economic Growth,” which in addition to rolling back a number of Obama-era climate polices may also make it easier for energy companies to drill in America’s national parks.” Via Fusion TV.

Theft of Bill Curtis’s Ashes Becomes a Whodunit

Last fall the ashes of Florida Keys fly-fishing legend Capt. Bill Curtis were recently stolen from a parked pickup truck, sparking a mystery in the style of a Carl Hiaasen novel. Curtis “had no spurned lovers, lifelong enemies, obsessed fans or angry family members, according to friends, family and the police,” and the theft has created ongoing theories from some of Curtis’s closest friends, including fellow angler and author, Tom McGuane. “My theory is that it was a poor fisherman who knew what it was and thought that by sprinkling it on his Wheaties that someday he would be a better angler,” says McGuane. International Fly Tying Symposium Moving to Lancaster in November

This year the annual International Fly Tying Symposium will move from its former location at the Garden State Exhibit Center in Somerset, N.J., to the Marriott Hotel in Lancaster, Penn. The event will be held Nov. 11-12, 2017.

Read more in the press release below.

International Fly Tying Symposium Moving to Lancaster in November

From The International Fly Tying Symposium:

international fly tying symposium

The 2017 International Fly Tying Symposium is scheduled for Nov. 11-12 in the ballroom of the Marriott Hotel, Lancaster, Penn. The move was made necessary by the closing of the Garden State Exhibit Center in Somerset, NJ.

“While the shuttering of our longtime Somerset tying venue came as a shock, the Lancaster Marriott ballroom is perfectly-sized and offers far more amenities,” said show director Chuck Furimsky. “It was sheer luck that the room was available,” he added.

The 9,000-square foot ballroom is in the stately hotel on Downtown’s Penn Square, 25 So. Queen St., some 4.4 miles from the outdoor Landis Valley Museum and 4.9 miles from Dutch Wonderland amusement park. “It is the perfect size and perfect place for the symposium,” said Furimsky.

“Tiers who have always wanted to join the list of internationally-known artists and demonstrate at the symposium are welcome to contact me at Chuck@flyfishingshow.com or call 814-443-3638. It’s a favorite weekend event for a dedicated following and this move is centrally located for our loyal crowd; close enough to Philadelphia, Trenton, Baltimore, Washington and other major population centers and the ideal family weekend getaway site,” concluded Furimsky.
