Tippets: Fly Fishing Beaver Ponds, Chasing the Salmonfly Hatch

  • In the most recent episode of Trout Tips, Chris Hunt talks about what to do and what not to do when fishing a backcountry beaver pond.
  • In this article on Fly Fisherman, Montana-based guide Eric Paulson writes about chasing salmonfly hatches of the West. “Keep in mind that fishing these big bugs is not all rainbows and unicorns; the hatch can be elusive, its timing can be geographically difficult to predict, and simply, that moment in time can be hard to come by.

  • In this article, John Herzer of Blackfoot River Outfitters in Montana writes about leading multi-day-float fishing trips for military veterans. “Although the participants rave about the healing power and personal relationship-building of the experience, make no mistake: the growth and strength gained from these trips is not one-sided.” Via Orvis.
  • In the most recent episode of The DrakeCast, Elliot Adler examines the sustainability of growth in the Faroe Islands, a small archipelago in the North Atlantic, about halfway between Norway and Iceland. “I was there to experience the culture and see if I could find a couple fish. But during my stay, what I found was an insulated country and fishery that is at an inflection point.” Via The Drake.

Patagonia Launches Worn Wear Online Store

Patagonia has announced the launch of their Worn Wear online store, which offers previously-owned Patagonia items at a lower price.

Read more in the press release below.

Patagonia Launches Worn Wear Online Store

From Patagonia:

Patagonia’s Worn Wear online store is a place where customers can buy previously-owned Patagonia gear at a lower price point, giving it a second life. With products sourced directly from Patagonia customers in exchange for merchandise credit, the Worn Wear online store aims to provide simple new ways to extend the life of high-quality gear while also proving that investing in the circular economy makes good business sense.

The need for businesses to step up and address the effects of climate change has never been greater. The global apparel market is worth $3 trillion, but unfortunately the low cost of manufacturing and the relentless drive for profits above all else has driven many companies to offer cheap, throwaway clothing rather than build high-quality gear built to last. Worn Wear seeks to help reverse this trend by highlighting the value of investing in high-quality products, providing the tools required for long-term ownership and by providing a platform for resale of used goods. Patagonia is proud to lead a growing number of organizations committed to furthering the circular economy business model.

Tippets: Bipartisan Effort on Climate Change, Salmon Return to Upper Elwha, Warming Waters Hurt Salmon Populations

  • Recently, a bipartisan meeting of the Climate Solutions Caucus was held on Capitol Hill to address “The Economic Impacts of Climate Change on Tourism and Recreational Activities.” Phil Monahan reports on the hearing via Orvis: “Together, sportsmen and –women represent a powerful constituency that can push hard for change, and the industries that support these outdoor pursuits bring economic clout to the argument, as well.”
  • Fisheries managers in Olympic National Park have confirmed the first salmon in 102 years have reached the upper stretches of the Elwha River. “They found three adult Chinook salmon, all between 30 and 36 inches long, in the former Lake Mills, between Windy Arm and Glines Canyon.” Via The National Park Service.
  • Unusually warm sea surface temperatures in the North Pacific Ocean is having serious effects on salmon populations. “Federal research surveys this summer caught among the lowest numbers of juvenile coho and Chinook salmon in 20 years, suggesting that many fish did not survive their first months at sea. Scientists warn that salmon fisheries may face hard times in the next few years.” Via The Spokesman–Review.

2017 AFFTA Board Election Update

BOZEMAN, Mont. – The American Fly Fishing Trade Association (AFFTA) is pleased to announce that Jen Ripple of Fly Squared Media is a newly elected Board Member following Michael White’s decision to not accept a Board seat following the 2017 general membership election.

Ripple is the Principal of Tennessee-based Fly Squared Media, the Editor-in-Chief of DUN Magazine and the Executive Editor of Tight Loop Magazine.

White’s decision to not accept a seat on the Board was due to his personal desire to focus on his business and family.

“Michael’s decision to not accept a Board seat due to his conflicting time constraints with his family and business is unfortunate, but I understand his decision, said AFFTA President Ben Bulis. Having Jen’s media savvy and experience will be a welcome addition to the AFFTA board. She joins the board at a time when her perspective will help increase the focus on a critical segment of the industry.”

New and re-elected board members will begin serving their three-year terms at the October 15, 2017 AFFTA Board meeting in Bozeman.

AFFTA advocates for and promotes the sustained growth of the fly fishing industry. By igniting consumer demand for products and services, providing businesses the tools to be successful, and advocating for access, protection and restoration of fishing waters, we will continue to enhance the passion and profitability of the sport of fly fishing.

Classic Pro Tip: Keep Your Fly In the Water

Your chances of catching a gorgeous trout like this increase the longer your fly is in the strike zone.

There’s an old saying among fishermen: You can’t catch fish if your line isn’t in the water. Whereas the husband recognized every great trout lie the boat floated past and. . .

Blackburn Design Releases ‘River’ in ‘Water Cycle’ Film Project

Blackburn Design has announced their new film project, Water Cycle. “The goal of this project is to recognize how important water is in our lives,” says Robin Sansom, Blackburn Design’s Director, and “Active stewardship is necessary to preserve water and our access to it.”

Read more in the press release below.

Blackburn Design releases ‘River’, the first chapter of the ‘Water Cycle’ film project

River, an exploration of bikefishing, serves as the first chapter of a film project that examines cyclists’ relationships with the world’s most abundant resource: water

(12 Sept 2017 – Santa Cruz, CA)  – Inspired by the 71% of the planet covered by water, Blackburn Design created Water Cycle, a new film project. River is being released today as the first chapter, and can be viewed at www.blackburndesign.com/river.

In this chapter, we follow Brian Ohlen, an avid fisherman and hunter from Montana.  Brian also has a passion for cycling and he combined the two by loading his waders, tackle and rod onto a bike to go in search of Steelhead along the rivers on the Pacific Coast from Canada to Mexico.  The best Steelhead fishing happens to be in the dead of winter.  Brian faced nearly constant rain, snow and ice for a chance to spend but a moment with one of these elusive creatures.  Along the way, he found some beautiful quiet moments and the simple joys that life on a bike can bring.

“The goal of this project is to recognize how important water is in our lives, especially as recreationalists. Brian’s trip is only one example. Active stewardship is necessary to preserve water and our access to it,” says Robin Sansom, Blackburn Design’s Director.

Public access to rivers and streams is important. As Ohlen states in the film, “if we ever lost that access or lost our public lands, it would be the death of the West.” Blackburn has partnered with Backcountry Hunters & Anglers to help protect public river access. Visit the Stream Access Pledge for more information.

Creative

River was directed by Dominic Gill of Encompass Films.  In 2006 Dominic bought a tandem bicycle, a heavy video camera and a plane ticket to the northern tip of Alaska. From there he spent two years pedaling south, inviting random strangers to join him on his tandem as he documented the journey on video. In 2009 he helped create an award winning one hour special about his journey entitled ‘Take A Seat’, and subsequently wrote a book of the same title. Since then he has blossomed into a talented film maker, has always been a fine human being and is a natural fit for this project.

Brian Vernor, a noted film maker and photographer, is providing art direction for the entire project.  Brian has long been a Blackburn collaborator and will be making certain that each story in the project has a distinct point of view, while still holding close to the overall theme and vision.  Look for more talented film-makers to create the upcoming chapters of Water Cycle.

Chris McNally provided the amazing illustrations.  G.C. Johnson & Acoustic Labs created the score.

About Blackburn

In 1975, Jim Blackburn looked at the at the emerging cycling culture and knew he could make a difference.  That meant thinking from the end-user perspective, showing respect for materials and their functionality, while offering purpose-built design and innovation. Over the years, Blackburn has adopted and honed those principles to build quality gear that allows people to go further, do more and be better prepared for everyday and extraordinary adventures alike.
